Got to meet Red himself and Jiggerjohn at the Niles Ohio Sportsman show. I had ordered some of Red's jigs to make sure I was in the ball park on their construction. In the pack he even included two of the jigs with just the wool tied on to help me out in the tying of them.

While some of mine are close that I have tied. None were good enough to get the cigar so to speak. Where I was falling short is the initial shaping of the wool. On Reds on turning it sideways you can see a definite minnow profile. So I will have to learn how to pull tug and otherwise cajole the wool into looking like his instructive pieces.

It is so refreshing to talk and listen to someone like Red. Nothing commercial about him and so willing to share his knowledge.
Had just as much fun talking to Jiggerjohn . Between the three of us there is about 200 years of fishing stories. They even had vises set up so that the prospective buyers could see the jigs being made.

I normally avoid this show , because of its main promoter. but I am glad I went to this one..

Good to hear you were able to spend some time with Red and JiggerJohn. Nothing like talking with others that also have the love of the outdoors and tying. :)

I'm sorry that you can not make the show Fatman. I was looking forward to meeting you. I plan on going and learning the right way to tie those jigs.

It's not that I don't want to but DIPSTICK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here took a header off the stairs yesterday morning and caught it right across the spot I injured last week plus my kidney. Large contusion and swelling, tried going to work and had to leave and go to the emergency room.

Just got back from the Niles, Ohio show with Red. Great times and wonderful people! Even got to chat at length with my good buddy on this site, Papaperch!! Red was there in his wheelchair, still a bit troubled walking from his recent hospital stay, but enjoyed sharing his vast wealth of info on crappie fishing and tying his wool/satin jig! What amazed me was the repeat customers from previous years, literally running to Red's booth to exclaim how well those jigs produced for them &buying big amounts more (and many of these guys were tiers themselves, but realized it's difficult to successfully copy a true MASTER!). Many other lure makers at the show -but many snuck over before the public entered, to buy their own stash of a lure that REALLY works, Red's creations!! More to mention, but got to wind down right now from all the thoughts & excitement!

At the Niles show, essentially a fishing crowd just chompin' at the bit for the snows to go away, most really were inspired by Red's often heard ,much proven concept - "If I stop to work a brushpile ,hump, or bar and the crappies don't load onto my wool/satin jigs within 10 minutes, they just ain't there, so I move!" He'd go on to demo the "3D" effect of the robust jigs while dunking them in water to swell up, and show the subsequent wild swimming action from the pushed out satin fibers& flash material.Red also advised me NOT to keep the jigs in small plastic tackle boxes,as I generally do with all jigs, due to the way hooks easily tangle in the wool; as he always does, I now PIN mine individually to thicker cardstock for immediate availability (this point hit home as we tried for minutes to separate just 2 jigs I had loose in a packet!!). This instant hook tangling adds a bit to the statement that wool tangles within the tiny teeth of fish, for more leisurely hook setting! Another tying "secret" from this wily old master - he always extends the white satin a bit further behind the wool base than other overlying colored satin of flashing for a bit more action and sight!

papaperch. Is there anyway you can post a picture of the jigs without the satin? I have tied about 30 of these things and I can't get the tail to come together, all the satin fibers continue to flare out. I think I am making my mistake when I tie on the wool, I don't think I am using the correct amount. These are the first jigs I have ever tried to tie and maybe that is the problem. Any pics you could provide to help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Since I had the pleasure of learning and talking with Red. I plan on doing a series of pix on material and tying steps used to complete Red's master piece. As previously stated by JJ and Red himself a lot of research went into this jig. Looking simple there is a lot more to it than first meets the eye.

I still am no expert myself on this but my wool ties are starting to look like his. I even bought some of Red's originals to compare how effective mine are vs his. I expect to lose but as stated before if mine are 50% effective as his I will be happy.

Red has concentrated almost exclusively on his wool jigs and his observation skills are second to none. My mind is always going on at least 3 or 4 things at once. Only when I am fishing is my attention focused 100%. Any way will try getting series of pix put up tomorrow. Long as wife don't find something for me to do.

FM- Please be advised Red would be the best one to judge but he will not go near a computer I guess. So for what its worth I think you have the main criteria down. One thing on all Reds jigs the satin fibers are longer than everything else. Not drastically but say @ 1/4 inch or so.

Ultimately the fish will be the final judge of course. I have probably tied 150 or so of the wools myself. The only round head I used so far is a chrome plated one. So if the round head is vital to the fish mine may be suitable for display only. Most of mine are the aspirin head , chubs and types with recessed eyes.

If I had to pick a favorite the aspirin head wool would be it. Mr Crappie might have a different opinion though. Hope to find out in South Carolina last 2 weeks of this month.

Thanks Perch - I've tied them on redman heads, ball and minnow but I had a couple folks ask me some ?? and maybe you know and it really applies to the satin being longer and the non shiny fibers from the satin.

- Also when you are pulling out the satin are you using any of the "non-shine" threads. I am pulling the material in on direction and using mainly the shine threads for the wool jigs but I have been working on using the other side of material for tail material.

- I tried satin down the back on one I tied to mimic an emerald shiner. It looked great, but once I tried it in my test tank ( aquarium ) the satin on the back tangled into an awful mess from the hook barb
