Hawnjigs
KISS
Thats what the local walleye jiggers here call walleye or ball head jigs tied with long skinny marabou popular colors being white, chartreuse, & gray. One guy in particular stands out as an expert Mike the son of the late Ray Streeter who supplied local tackle shops with his own version of Doll Fly (jigs). I thought they looked goofy typically tied 4" long on 1/4 & sometimes 3/8 oz heads and never have & likely never will make & use em in that configuration. That said Mike outfished my plastics most of the time when he & I were close enuf to compare.
So...this season because the plastics bite has been slow I decided to make my own version using 1/9 oz #1 2x hooks de-collared Hooksup heads tied with white rabbit, off white mink, and mystery junk white fur provided by one of our members. Most are around 2" total length including head & tie except the longest Jigger John Boolie version with upsize 1/0 hook to accommodate a shank propeller is 2-1/4" including a Flashabou undertie tail so they are half the length of the local Doll Flies. My shorter ties are similar to the Elmer Thompson originals.
Been giving them a lot of daily field testing for over a week now and suffice to say I am impressed enuf with their bite attraction that I haven't reverted to plastics. Looking forward to tomorrows session with Tom who is an expert wally getter using plastics. He totes 5 rods with different color Keitech or local replica 3" boot tails and is serious about right color for a place and time. Chance to compare the efficacy of my tied jigs vs. his knowledge of plastics.
