Here is my original 1/4 oz. bucktail dry.You can see the colors better. The kip 1/8 oz. is a close second,I think. If I would have painted that head silver and black,I think that it would be my #1.

Oh yes - i am interested. Some nice looking ties so far... the mylar looks interesting. I have some ideas, and a few of them already made. Will have to get some pics taken. I am thinking an olive mallard flank would make a nice back color..... not sure i have any olive though.

BTW - I did catch the big y.perch of the day last year on one trip using a tied jig (buggy looking) tipped with a chunk of crawler. Was a slow day and i was hoping for a big sh!thead. Managed a few perch on the same jig/crawler but the w.bass would nail it first most times.

Thanks for all attempts. I hope this as much fun and interesting to all as it is to me. Flyfishermen always preach " match the hatch ". Although impossible to exactly match the looks of a live emerald shiner. I believe a close imitation and similar blur of color that an artifical projects. Will induce a fish to attack with the same vigor he displays on the real thing.

I gave it a shot, not happy with the results.I think a lighter colored flank feather would have been better. I tied several but instead of getting better they got worse. The first one turned out the best.

Jim those heads look great and the jigs look good too.

I'm going to try again today as I had trouble after I tied the hackle to the shank and tried to cut the tubing so it would slide over the hackle just right. Will try to make it better the second time..LOL

Very interesting to see all the different jigs.

Here are some of my attempts. I am using minnow head jig with barb and collar cut off. All of these are slightly different as to materials. All heads are painted chrome and then black on top of head for contrast. Some I use a tinsel wrap on top of chenille underlayment for body. Then cover with clear cure goo for translucent effect. I have one on the drying rack that is my best so far. Will post pix of it tommorow.

forgot to mention I am using long shank jig hooks. The emerald shiner has a long narrow body. Note the one that has a standard length just doesn't seem right to me.

Lostpole- Just google " Clear Cure Goo ". Young AMERICAN based company. It is expensive but 1 tube does go quite far. Others like to use Loon products. What they have in common is they use an ultra- blue lite to cure the formula. They suggest use each manufacturers light for their own product. Since different makers have different specs. The " cure " only takes seconds and doesn't require mixing. I use Sally Hansens clear nail polish as a final coat.

Right now I am on hold for some light olive Icelandic sheep hair. Still not fully satisfied with final product.

Second set I am a little more pleased with. The ones to the extreme left were done with some bunny cut from zonker strip. THe one to right of the ruler was not intended to be emerald shiner. Got bored of tying same general pattern so tried a perchy type minner.

Now I will be on hold until other materials get here. Still want to see some more ties out of you guys.

Here's my last try for these Emeralds.I have to go fish a few so I know if I'm going in the right direction with them or not. This is a 3/16 head, olive and white bucktail with a skinny black stripe to go between the colors and some chartruese flash.I put some transparent yellow on top of the silver head to give it that greenish tint to it.

Got a few new ones made up and pics....

1st up -
1/8th oz. w/ trimmed collar & filed down to shape.
Nail polish & glitter paint
Cream/gray/black (belly/sides/back) craft fur with a mallard flank over the top.
Pearl midge and green flashabou
101_3259_e.jpg

Next are a couple of bead heads using hematite (iron oxide so they do have wt.) in clouser style using poly yarn on the throat area to help keep a profile once wet, not the pinhead look that a standard clouser gets once wet.

Lrg. bead head - castable with spinning gear. ;)
#4 Mustad Nymph hook
White/olive/black bucktail
Pearl midge flash in tail - green flashabou wrapped on shank
Lt. Green poly yarn throat
101_3253_e.jpg

Med. bead head - Fly rod
#8 Diachii nymph hook
Gray/black craft fur
Pearl midge flash in tail & ribbed up hook shank
Gray poly yarn throat
101_3245_e.jpg

The craft fur version of traditional Clouser's has been a killer for me this year, mostly for bluegills on my fly rod. I did make up some small bead heads on #12's but not in this color pattern so didn't show them here.... i will post those soon, have a few others too. :)
