Tied-In Leather Trailer

This is one of my typical hair jigs with a tied-in leather trailer.



I was inspired to tie this by thinking of Dan Gapen's Hairy Worm, a bass catching jig from yesteryear.

Materials:

• A 1/8-oz. ball head jig with a 2/0 black nickel Gamakatsu hook.
• Darice Craft Fur - orange and brown.
• Harbor Freight Powder Paint - brown mixture.
• Tandy Leather Factory Premium Leather Scrap.
• UTC Ultra Thread 140 denier - rusty brown.

Looking forward to fall and cooler temperatures in order to set this jig's hook.

That leather should put an excellent whip in the tail. :jig: Can remember finding some old lures that used leather strips as trailers and spinnerbait skirts. Maybe they were called dry-rinds? Only found a few packages of them way back when and they are long gone now.

Waiting for cooler temps...... is your local rivers going to have any water left? Hearing about all the farm troubles in some areas of IN.

That will work for sure. Was wondering if you use scents with your jigs. I think leather would hold it well.

Gapen's lures used to be really popular with Hoosier fishermen years ago. I like to revive reasonable facsimiles of them every once in a while.

Great question. I assume we'll have rain before October, but who knows? We are under a burn ban and a watering ban as of last Friday. Water supply reservoirs are drying up. It's been miserable around here, worse than any other summer that I can recall.

I don't use scents usually, but may try it sometime just to find out. Scented offerings have often resulted in catfish bites for me at the river.
