Well if you go for it I'd have a shop vac right next to you and suck up any fur that gets loose. You can always use it for dubbing and even try dying some of it.

You can spend your $$$ on whatever you want...... don't ask for oppinion if you don't want to hear both sides. ;)

Got no problems hearing both sides that is the whole point of the matter, but to constantly hear the whining "that it is too expensive for me" is not an opinion from the other side unless you are referring to the far side, that is more a personal issue than it is an opinion, which should be kept personal unless you dont mind the whole world knowing that you are living way beyond and above your means if $5 is going to make or break you. That is not an opinion that is a personal problem and should be kept as such....

Are you serious?
An "opinion" is an opinion. No matter how far from any side it comes.

Cut the hide in the direction of hair growth . The blades will kind of comb the hair so as not to leave as much trimmings . Takes practice . Be careful I cut the crap out of myself more than once changing blades and in general dinking around .

As he said the opinion was for the product, not the cost. Whether or not you think the product will work given one's experience in the area the product was made for is one thing and whether or not you would personally buy it due to cost is another. Anyone can give an opinion whether or not they think something will work without mentioning the cost. It is a personal decision whether or not you will spring the cash for it and apparently Doc doesn't care what you think of the cost.

I tell y'all, the bunny cutting is a pain! You think you have a good hide and after you cut the strips the hair pulls out. I dyed some bunny and squirrel today for the first time and I think I had more hair go down the drain than stayed on the hide on the bunny. Got the color I was wanting but man this cutting bunny is for the birds... If I can ever get my hands on some so squirrel hides I'm going to try them but I'll buy my bunny strips already cut.

I would like to spend an hour using that cutter Doc on some bunny that someone else bought :D

Hey stump when you dye that stuff keep a close eye on the water temp . After it hits 140 and up past that is the danger zone . Sometimes that causes the hair to come out .

The hair came out while I was washing the bunny before dyeing it. Thanks for the heads up on the temps.

I've dyed bunny strips and it dried stiff as a board. I tried fabric softeners, hair conditioners and still stiff. Anyone have any suggestions? I just got five crosscut hides in today and decided to weigh them still in their bags. The five weighed four ozs. That would be 20 skins for a lb. or 2000 for 100lbs. That's a lot of bunny's. I'm with Stump,I think I'll keep getting mine already cut. I wish special ordering colors didn't take so long. I ordered them June 26th and just got them today.

J. Stockard Fly Fishing. They don't carry the whole skins in stock so they special order them. I believe they carry the micro rabbit strips but in zonkers, not the crosscut. I could be wrong. It would be worth checking into.

Uncut hides would weigh more. Hareline trims off the edge pieces that can't be cut into full strips and sells them in variety packs. I picked one up at Cabela's last year for about $4.

You have to work oil into the leather to make it pliable again. There are oil based products used for leather shoes and coats that may help. Just be caredul not to get them on the hair. Obviously, this is best done after dying but before stripping. You might check with a furrier to see if they have anything for restoring stiff and brittle leather on furs without staining.

I cut them by hand. Single sided razor blade - sold at hardware stores- a forceps and two or three spring loaded hand clamps. Attach to front of worktable with clamps, use forceps to hold left front edge of rabbit and cut with razor blade. Skin has to be cut in half first. Why by hand? I tie a lot of jigs and some I want wider tails for. Also the width of a piece of cross cut can be made to fit particular size of heads and hooks. A thin piece of crosscut on a 1/2 oz pike jig is going to limit the width of the collar which can effect quality as well as the look of the jig. To wide on a small jig and forget it. It won't look very good. Hope this helps

Sometimes when you enjoy doing something, you have to break away from that MICKY MOUSE BUDGET PLAN and splurge a bit and spend a little bit of money. I just see no satisfaction, happiness or joy in anything in the world if you are going to spend you entire life worried about spending a little bit of money. As far as justification for the cost, is there really such a thing, if you are happy with it and happy with the final out come of what you are using it for, is that not justification enough. I think it is and I am sure glad I missed the money is everything bus, got to keep it cant spend it and enjoy some of the little things in life that makes one feel good. Life is just too short to spend it being a penny pinching cheap a$$ good for nothing, that is no way to spend a life time.... At least I dont think it is.... thats my 2 cents worth take it or leave it, most will leave it and that is fine, but dont you get tired of hearing people whine about money all the time, especially when you are hearing it from others that are allot better off than yourself.

As some of you know I have been out of work for going on two years now,and being over 50 is not a good thing when it comes to finding a new job in todays world, yet I dont walk around complaining about how much everything costs these days that is just a waste of time and energy, instead you fine other ways and means to get done what you have to get done it is that simple, you adapt and adjust and most of all have faith, you would be surprised what you can do and accomplish just by not loosing faith.... Boy does venting make
you feel much better yes it does....

I have been in the same boat in my 50's My solution was to expand my jig making and promoting it. As you know you can't make much money tying jigs but you make some and feel as if you are accomplishing something.
