Safety is the name of the game - You've seen how close JungleJim came to getting it. And I will tell you from VERY!!!!!!!!!!! PAINFUL experience you don't want a bad one. Before all the snazzy pots and melters (I was 12), I used a piece of L shaped steel pipe when I wasn't with my Uncle and a propane torch.
Had my sinker mold set up, I could pour 2 at a time. My little brother walked by with a glass of water and spilled some and I didn't see it. Poured the lead in and BAM!!!!!!!!!! Back in those days we didn't worry about all the saftey factors - I got a very small piece right in the left eye on the white part some under the chin and next to my mouth.
Face went right into a bucket of water and then my Mom took me to the Hospital - and they got the lead out of my eye and off the face. Needless to say I had an eye patch for the next 3 weeks and drops that hurt like hell, and in those days the Doc said just take some aspirin.
Scoot forward to age 48 - going to the eye doctor. She does the glucoma test with the blue beam and can no longer see the burn mark, which had showed up a year before - took all those years and so slow is good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
