AF I lived in Iowa for a number of years. Yes the manure was a problem but not as big as other chemicals in the Herbicides. Now if you want we can talk about agent orange. Don't care to talk about that one well how about other heavy metals. A study was don't around the upper mid-west and they found out that the leading cancer in the upper mid-west was prostrate cancer. Why because most farmers had well water and the farm chemical runoff attacked the prostrate. It was also the leading cause of cancer death in people under 40. Those farmers that had been around a long time didn't get the dose that the younger farmers had.

I too don't think that leaving a little lead in the lake will hurt the environment as much as some would think. A study was done on Lake Okoboji when it started to go down in fish population and it was discovered that as the reeds and wetland disappeared on the lake the quality of the water went down. The reeds and wetlands acted as a water filtration system. It was bad for fish and bad for humans also. For right at 90 years before the study the lake was almost pristine and people hunted and fished around it. When the land developers came in and destroyed the wet lands there went the lake. Today it is know as the dead sea. A thriving fishery was totally destroyed in a little over 20 years. Hope the developers are enjoying the ill got gains. There will be a price to pay.
