Interesting thread. I have given this some thought for about a hour or so. I have reread this thread a couple of times. There are some good arguments for several. Peacock would be good as it has several color hues. Black is a good basic color and Gray is a good one too. Gray is a color between white and black.

My choice is

Black #2 Chartreuse.Guess in a time when I could not get any tying material I would have to use Gray Squirrel as they are the most abundant small game in our neck in the woods and think that i could make a nice crappie jig with them. Darn I don't even want to think about not having to use just one color. Guess I better stock up on Kip tail and marabou Not that I will ever run out with my present supply.

Years ago an old jig mold making friend mentioned one of his top customers and a true expert jigger mentioned that gray is "numero uno" in jig dressing. Then one of the original companies that specialized in supplying rabbit fur confided that their "blue dun" (it was gray!) was their top secret color. I initially used gray with rabbit fur jigs because it was natural and I didn't want any coloring to mess up action! Last week I'd tied up some light Boolie jigs with a thin ,long mink tail to imitate a small worm or leech -did very well with black & blue tails,UNTIL my son made one with gray mink- could barely keep fish off, cast after cast!! So have to agree with Hawn & Redman;gray is tough to beat!!!

This year black has worked real well for me. An all black marabou jig imitiates anything from a minnow, leech, or large nymph. White would be a close second.

I just started tying jigs this year, and all brown has probably caught me the most fish. It would be my choice if I had to restrict to just one color.

I like gray alot too, it has really been a killer at times. And gray hair with a pink head, that is fast becoming a fav of mine. I buy the gray kiptails in pearl gray and shad gray.
