After my second heart attack last month I cut back on the smoking and finally decided it's time to quit. I havn't had one since 7:00 last Wednesday night. It's been rough but so far so good. Trying to stay busy but it's hard to stay focused when it seems that all I think about is lighting one up. Hope these urges pass soon.

I wish you all the strength in the world! Quitting was one of the best decisions i have made in my life. At some point you will look at other smokers and think........ why would they do that to themselves? The cravings hurt - but i bet your lungs don't nearly as bad even after only a week.

TRUST ME you will be so glad you did. Tell yourself when you have that urge that your not going to let something like a cigerette that has no brain and is not living, control you!! You are stronger then that cigerette....so don't let it win!
Use your competitiveness(spelling ??) to not let that thing outsmart you. It will be tough especially that first 3 days but keep telling yourself it will get easier and that now that you have started you DON'T want to have to start over again(it does not get easier each time you try to quit) so stick with it THIS time.
Think of your loved ones and how much they want you to quit....if you don't think you can quit for you...do it for them...just be sure and do it.
Last but not least, how much do you spend on smoking? DO tell yourself and DO spend that money on YOU, rather it be fishing equipment or maybe you WHERE smoking enough to pay for a boat.
Keep at it....you can do it and you will be glad you did.
By the way, hard candies can really help with the hand to mouth habit. Even suckers can really help those first few days.

JJ quit eight years ago. Now I can't take cigarette smoke. I do smoke a pipe but they are two different animals. Keep it up as it was one of the better things I have done in my life.

God going JJ I quit for the wrong reason but it worked. Soon after Obama got in office the Federal government raised the tax on pack of cigs. Ticked me off so much I told the store clerk to put the two packs I had just asked back on the shelf. The owner, a friend of mine , kinda chuckled , he had seen me quit many times before. The two I asked for are still sitting on his rack. he says thats a monument to me. They been sitting there since 2008. After 42 years of smoking I was done.

Now when I am standing there drinking coffee and some pour soul come in to buy cigs. I can't help but smile inwardly at paying those high prices for something thats killing you.

Another thing reward yourself somehow. Pick an anniversary date in the future and figure on buying something you wanted. Whatever works for you.

If everything else fails try those E-Cigs. The ones that emit water vapor. Quite a few guys I know have used them to quit the real things.

You can do this I did and I have the weakest will power in the world. LOL

Hang in there JJ. When the doctor told me if I didn't quit that he would see me from the inside again I decided I didn't want that so after 35 years I stopped. That was Oct of 09. It isn't easy but you will get through it and wonder why you didn't stop before now. I'm pulling for you along with the rest.

Stump, doctor told me the same thing last month. I had quit before for several years and within a month of retiring in July of 08 I started smoking again. Good to see all the support here along with some of your stories. It helps a bunch.

I was worried first time i fished without smokes. I was one that always lit a cig and had it hanging from my lip the whole time i was fishing practically. After quitting, went out with a buddy of mine who still smokes and was amazed at how much time/casts he wasted because he was lighting smokes or flicking ashes or just digging them out of his pocket. Not to mention the times i had to re-tie because i accidentally tapped my line with the cherry or had a hot ash hit my line and crinkle it.
