Maybe I tie under a rock or just that I have a few years worth of thread on hand but I just found out while looking to place an order that Gudebrod is no longer produced.

Does anyone have a recomendation for a quality nylon size A thread that would be on the same size spool as the 950 yrd Gudebrod?

It looks like Gudebrod has been split up and sold to a couple different companies. The web site directs you to a company that manufactures surgical threads.
Mostly Im interested in Red Nylon on 950 yrd spools.

buying the large cones would be great. Over the years I have searched for a machine to spool thread onto the 950yrd spools. Price always was a factor and these machines are usually available from mainland China.

Bet there might be some more people, that went to that liquidation, might be selling also.

I think the lead core silver thread is going to be something to look at.....

Jay Wirth You are right there is none of the NCP what we used to call 1 oz spools. The size was A and it was the best stuff going IMHO. Four years ago I bought 6 spools of the NCP in A two Red ( all that they had) two Blue and two black. One of those spools will last me for about three years. When I could no longer get it and knew that it would no longer be available I explored other options. Best one I found was the Danville Flymaster 210 denier.

Man I hate that I could no longer get that but even Danville makes A on a limited basis. Believe me Flymaster is most likely your best bet. Hopefully the stuff I have will last me most of the rest of my life. If it don't I will tie with Flymaster. The Times they are a changing!!!!!!!!! And so must we.

Sonny better keep it close I will be ok. One of those spools last a long time. To bad that they thur in the towel. There braided black nylon casting 150 lbs. test was the standard that all others were judged with muskie fishing. Never broke off never fraid super line. As I remembered not a bad price ether. Very sorry to see them go.

Does Anyone remember Gudebrod's Dacron Line? I once used it religiously as my fly line backing. Thirty-five pound test as I recall...steelhead backing.

Should I become religious about fly fishing again, I know I'll miss that line. :(

LedHed Thanks for the offer PM sent.

I have 14 950yrd spools of red. This will last me till the end of the summer. I also have a few boxes of Lilly, Danville and Gudebrod 100yrd spools.

Heres a pick of what I have on hand, many boxes of many different colors sizes A, 2/0, 4/0, flos, and acatate. If anyone has red spools and wants to trade let me know.

Pup remember it well the Scandhoovens ( Dane's, Swede's Norwegians) used it to fish for Bullheads on old baitcaster reels. They would catch 5 gallon buckets full of them. Not bad eating but a pain to clean. In some parts of the country they call them horned trout. Look like a catfish only smaller. I do catch some down here and they are called mudcat. Have tried eating them but down here they are very muddy tasting. In the clean and cold water they do have somewhat a taste of trout. I like them best smoked with apple wood. But dang I like anything smoked from cheese to jalapenos peppers. From buffalo to bream. It's all good off a smoker. Just learned how to smoke bake beans nothing better.

I purchased a 950yrd spool from Pacific Bay. The spool itself is a hard, slick plastic witha bit of weight which will take a little getting used to. It fits my bobbin nicely and is very similare to the Gudebrob A thread. My sample jig is a 5/8 Barumba Head. Im pretty sure this will be my go-to thread, Ill let you know after I tie 1Kdoz :D

Ok Mr. Jay Wirth now may I ask a question??? Where in the world did you get it from and is it comparable to Gudebrods as far as price. Like the color closer to blood red the better.

For those of you that don't know Mr Wirth is a painter of classic game pieces. I hope I said that right. Not only that but a streamer fly and jig tier of note. You need to visit his web site and see some of his handy work. Impressive!!!

Thanks for the kind words redman. I have been painting toysoldiers since I was a teen. The toysoldiers business is something I started 20 years ago, I made a lot of money painting soldiers but am now mainly a manufacturer of the bases the figures are standing on and used in wargaming. Ive been pushing little guys around almost as long at I have been fooling fish ;D

The Pac Bay nylon (size A) is very similare to Gudebrod, if it wasnt for the spool weight difference I wouldn't notice. You can see my bobbin in the picture of the jig. I use the old Universal Vise bobbin with the large spools. Im pretty sure the weight of the spool will not be a problem but I will probably rough up the spool ends OR add tape so there is a little more friction in the bobbin as the spool spins. I like the cherry red though they did offer two other reds, one more orange and one dark. Cost was just under $10 for the 950 yrd spool ($2.75 for 100 yrd spool). There were lots of colors in the nylon and I am planning on grabbing a few of the nylon colors with sparkle. I found this thread through The Rod Room, I was looking for some hackle pliers with brass tabs for your fingers (English style) and they happened to be the first I found with a US address (therodroom.com).

Thanks for the info. As for the bobbin tension a few burrs on the Center hole might cure your ills. I use the big open frame wire bobbins. A big hand full but it is what I am use to. Sure miss the old wooden spools. Maybe I will scatter wind a few hundred yards on oneof the old wooden spools for old times sake.

Not get off topic here but I hope you can answer my questions. I have a couple of custom rods and 3 or 4 production rods that the guides were done with Gudebrod thread and I know it is used for that and when I started tying bucktails I was told that the only thread to use was flat waxed nylon and I stuck with that, I use 210 95% of the time and 140 the other 5%. My question to you guys is this, what is the advantage of NCP thread, and why is rod wrapping thread better than the Danville Flymaster? I'm asking because you guys seem to really like it and I was told rod wrap is super strong which is why they tie down rod guides with it but it doesn't lay right to tie jigs with, I apologize for this but I'm interested in why these are preferred, thanks.

Im sure there are many different answers to this thread question. I think flat waxed nylon or floss make a nice collar and work fine. Nylon thread is cheap and plentiful - with production tying the larger 1000yrd spools save time and money. Nylon is a good choice for use in water and is pretty strong when used on larger jigs for pike and walleye. I would add that for a beginning tyer nylon is easy to use and is good for all applications (2/0, 4/0 for tiny stuff and A for jigs over 1/8).

Just my $ .02
