I took everybodies ideas and put them to use,CrappieHappy used your light mono, quivera kid used your half rap extra of chenille and Snake River ,three wraps after the palmered stem was cut off. Then quivera kid for two hand whip finishes at the end. This skinny little neck is what I came up with.I like it.

Another thing to cut back on the thread, if you whip finish use a three turn instead of 5. Having tied flies you find out about the thread issue and the proportions of each part and you have to do that with jigs too.

If you want a really thin thread that won't break easily, try GSP. It comes in sizes down to 50 denier. It is expensive, though. Runs about $3 for a 50 yard spool locally. It is very tough for the diameter. I use 200 denier on my steelhead jigs and I can't break it by hand. You'll cut yourself with it if you're not careful.

On a lot of my favorite patterns I like to show a red collar to imitate the red gill flash so don't worry about the little bit of thread showing. If you are trying to imitate a minnow or bait fish they will have a touch of red at the gill. Then there are the Flash Ducks that have a thread collar anyway. Or how about the hair jigs, and Thread necks??

Who decided that there was to be no collars on crappie jigs any way. I never got to vote on that one.

I think the reasoning is if the thread is hidden, there's less chance of the thread being cut and the jig unraveling.
