x3 on the glass table being scarey!

Did you flux with wax bits? LedHed mentioned he likes a smoking smolder but most recommend that the wax has to ignite to do its cleaning job properly. To stir flaming melt your kitchen spoon may not be the best tool.

In my experience clean soft lead is not bubbly. A good soft lead ingot should have a rather shiny silver or bluish/golden surface usually with a wrinkly indent in the middle. An ingot that solidifies with a flat and grainy top surface indicates hardness.

Well, you'll find out if the lead is hard or soft when you try to pour small jig heads.

Ok got all the ingots peeled out of the cups and took a good look, sure enough every last one of them are bubbly. Got a hold of my friend and said that the lead he gave me was used for bullet lead, which they used hard lead....how upsetting. I know it was the thought that counted, giving me the lead, but least he could have told me the whole truth. Now back to square one one the lead. Upside, went flea marketing and found me an old cast iron bread stick pan...I'm happy!

That bread stick pan is a score - took me 10 years to find one! I really like the different ingot shape to distinguish lead free from lead alloys.

Harder lead might pour sinkers or larger jig heads OK. Be good practice before you tackle the small heads.

I use a muffin tin for my ingots, and label them w/ a Sharpy marker when cool.

When you find some pure soft lead you can mix 2 parts hard with 1 part soft and it will pour down to 1/32 with no inserts. It's weird on some of the Do-It molds - some will take hard lead down to 1/32nd and others won't. I keep a list of which ones will but I still try and keep the 2-1 mix as it works for me.
