Looks like everyone but me is now pouring...Oh well, at least I have lots of sources for heads ...

If you don't have to pour and are happy with that, I wouldn't pour either. I don't really enjoy the pouring part that much anyway, but cost wise when you deal with the bigger jigs....I'll pour lol.

I have a lot a soft lead that a friend gave after buying my melting pot, sometime last year. Been wanting to get out my pot and start in on melting lead until..I can't remember who it was....posted where lead popped or blew up in his pot and splattered everywhere, thank gawd he wasn't hurt. I've been waiting for someone to be home when I started the pot up, but can never time it. So, I bit the lead weight and broke everything out today. Pretty proud of myself. I want to melt my lead down, clean it up and have it ready to remelt and make my own jigheads. Now I have a set back, I used a stainless steal muffin pan. Worked great! BUT...... the lead doesn't come out of the pan...YIKES! :dodgy: I really need a couple of cast iron ingot or a 12 cup cast iron muffin mold, but can't find one cheap enough, I'm a poor preson. :P About the table, thought about that to...thats why I set one of my grates from my smoker under the muffin pan. All in all, no fear now! :D

Way to go! Turn that pan upside down and drop it on some concrete.... They'll come out!

I did! When I dropped the pan down on the concert, the little cups seperated from the pan with the lead still inside the cups. So.....now I'm minus a pan. Looks like I'm going to have to order from Do-It Molds. Found that the ingot mold they have are around $13 a pan. Need to go and check out some of the flea markets before I do. Haven't flea marketing for awhile, need to check them out. :D

You can get those old cornbread stick pans at the flea market or junk shops for couple buck especially if they are not American made . Where you live there should be a lot of them around . Watch out setting or splashing lead on glass tables and things like that . It will shatter . I put a pyrex cup full of hot plastic on a cold metal counter once . Blew up like a grenade. Hot plastic and glass went six feet in every direction . Glass filled plastic boogers all over the place . DON'T get water of even a drop of sweat in that pot . Wear a brain band aid when it is hot and you perspire . Did that too . Not trying to worry you just keep you safe .

Heather - we are always proud of you.

Always respect hot lead! You will, soon, want a bottom pour pot....

x2 on the bottom pour.

The Lee ingot mold with the wood handle is aluminum and rather fragile. I broke the handle off tapping the mold on a hard surface to dislodge the ingots.

Judging by the top surface appearance of the ingots the lead is either dirty, hard, or both. Did you flux, or use Toadfrog's dowel stirring method to clean the melt?

Nope, I did flux the lead and the lead is a soft lead. It's kind of bubbly. I thought it was dirty too, but it's not. I will flux again before pouring my first heads.

I'll x3 the bottom pour - I used a hot pot like that for years before I got the bottom pour and the bottoms are so much easier and speed up the process of pouring.

Next time you melt scrap down or even getting a batch ready to pour jigs get an aluminum foil pie pan and just set it over the top of your pot - it something did pop the pan would catch it before you do, and yeah I didn't even realize what table you were on ditch it for a wood bench, much safer.
