A bit of a funny true story from several years back here in Pa. A waterways patrolman was checking licenses, etc one day and came across a boy of about 5 or 6,fishing a pool area of a meadow stream. The kid had an impressive string of legal sized smallmouth bass, almost a limit. "Watcha catchin em on, young fella?" quiered the warden. "Oh they love these bitin' worms!" said the kid. The fishcop never heard of bitin' worms and asked to see the child's bait bucket. He about fainted when he opened the lid and saw a bunch of active, slithering baby copperheads ! Of course he immediately escorted the kid to the local emergency ward, but the young snakes had yet, apparently, to develop any serious venom! (I'm still trying to develop that "bitin' worm" jig -hmmmm,maybe some of that new colored raw wool that Red just gave me!!)

PS Instead of buildin the bitin worm jig mentioned above, you could always do what this brave (crazy!) kayak angler did with "tipping" in this series of 14 photos -

Keith sound exactly like our slow worm snake. I have heard people call them grass snakes. We get a few on the car port every year. The cat usually ends up killing them and brings them to the backdoor like she does with all her kills.
