Materials used are 1/16 walleye head on a #4 bronze sickle, chartreuse uni floss, natural white sculpin wool, fl.yellow and natural mallard flank, size 70 chartreuse ultra thread and chartreuse/white reptile rubber. STEP #1 Tie in the floss at the bend and return thread to head. Tie in white sculpin wool at head. Next tie fl.yellow mallard on top, turn jig over and add the natural mallard to bottom or jigs belly. Last step is adding a two piece strand of reptile rubber to bottom and tie off. With the reptile rubber you can split the strands or leave them together. I'm going to try both tomorrow morning.View attachment 9View attachment 1View attachment 2View attachment 3

Looks sweet. Never seen before. What is your experience with the lure and color designs?

I'm not sure what you mean pb. I've been playing with duck feathers for many years and my first tie that caught fish was a duck jig. Crappie and gills ate the feathers off that jig until there was nothing left but thread. I've changed a few things since then and all work. I dye most of my own duck feathers, The second more natural duck jig was dyed using UV dyes that I found on ebay. I believe fish see these better, they have to see it before they can eat it. One picture shows how it looks under a black light.

They just move and look right in the water..... and I know cold water crappie like them! That orange dyed gadwall jig is just sweet.

Jim really nice tie and tutorial!!!!!!!!

Plate - using the flank feather over craft fur or wool is almost like reds satin jigs except with feathers. And they work!!! I can't even keep track of all the color combinations Jims posted with flank feathers.

The fluorescent dye I've been using I get from DARKLIGHTFX.COM They have several colors, the Electric Blue I use when I want the natural looking uv glow. I mix the small bottle of dye with about 12 oz.'s of water, a small shot of white vinegar in a small sauce pan. Pre soak your feathers in mild dish detergent and warm water, rinse and add to dye bath after it starts to boil. Turn off the heat and stir occasionally while letting them soak for about 15 minutes. Strain feathers in colander. Rinse and let dry on paper towels. I actually save and reuse the dye a few times. Put it back in the bottle and mark it dye so someone doesn't think it's koolaid. pb, that jig would work but there's something special about natural mallard flank feathers. Not much action but tie them on a jig and they start catching fish. A cold front came through here with winds out of the NW at 15-20. Not great conditions but managed a dozen or so mixed bag of bluegill, bass and one decent crappie in a couple hours using a plated duck jig in 1/32 and a pink and white 1/24 wooly hardbody jig. I think both of these will get bit at Perris next week.

I have to get some duck feathers and try that since I have the walleye jig mold. JJ1 that is a great tutorial, my only question would be on a substitute for the floss, is there something else that you think would work?

fm, it's easy and duck feathers are tough. I trim the fuzz and fluff before dying.. Do a small batch with just a few feathers and if it's what you want add more. smalljaw, you can substitute about anything for the floss. Hackle, flash, marabou are great choices as a substitute. Hackle is probably my favorite overall choice.

Thats a sweet idea, :icon14: uv is a big issue with cod, pike and zander (walleye) fishing over here. Have you tried that with rabbit skins, too?

The only true fluorescent rabbit skins I could find are spanish ones which are beeing dyed in the States, a trading way that totals in 20€ (27$) a skin for a small order, combined costs of merchandise, shipment and import duties... :(
