I've enjoyed reading Ward Bean's website too. His fly is weighted, so it's similar to a jig in that respect. Imo, a fisherman should pay attention to his retrieve when fishing a jig tied with this pattern. I'd strip retrieve this fly when fishing a fly rod to impart action and would try something similar with the jig version.

This fly is designed for freshwater black bass fishing where catch-and-release is ever popular. Many don't wish to chance gut or gill hooking a fish which would decrease its chances for survival upon release. Therefore, the trailer hook's been clipped.
