Since we have a lot of grits eaters ( southern guys ) that thinks that anybody that would fish on ice frozen lake is nuts. You are exactly right all of us icefishermen are nuts.

Lake Erie is probably one of the most productive lakes one could ever fish. If you watch the video all the way through. You will see why I don't ice fish on Erie but why I probably should. One of the great perils of being on the ice is when conditions are right is break offs of huge chunks of ice. Sometimes densely populated with fishermen. I always said if I wanted to try and sneak into Canada I wanted to know about it.

Two hints why I don't fish there. The half sunken frozen in place 4 wheeler and the guys standing on good ice right next to bad ( thin ) ice.

Anyway video is really good although unbelievable is heard entirely too much. Enjoy

Nice video but you won't catch me out there!!! I've been through the ice before and don't want to again. But ice breaking off happens on Ontario to and you'll see it every year a piece broken off and fisherman on it on the news.

First, no way will I eat grits when I can have deer sausage.....
Second, if ice fishing was my only option, I would have a hell of a fishing shack...
But then again, I'm nuts...

My wife is from Michigan. I just don't know if I'm that crazy or not. Definitely not down here in Okie-land. Although I've walked out onto ice on a local creek back when I was a kid, I would never consider it to be "safe ice".

Of course, I like to fish for Catfish, but I'm not crazy enough to stick my arm or leg into a hole and let some critter bite down on it, then draw said critter out of the hole.........

And there's nothing wrong with Grits, as long as you've got some salt, and a lot of butter and cheese mixed in, preferably with some plump sautéed shrimp over top............

In days of Old, when men were bold, they drove the family wagon out on the ice. and yes, every year there would be a couple break off or break thrus. Best one I remember was in 1982 watching a brand new CJ-7 making its way towards Niagra falls sitting pretty on a 40 foot chunk of ice. Unfortunately, it got rescued before making the falls. Never heard how the owner got separated from his jeep but would have loved to see his face when the chunk broke off.

It happens every year and if you spend time on the lakes, you understand how it can happen. For the life of me I cannot understand why people will travel out to the edge of the ice pack. Sure the ice may be 2-3 foot thick, but there are numerous cracks and the force of the flowing water is to me amazing and quite impressive.

I loved ice fishing before the knees started to wear out but we would usually walk out dragging our sled behind us.

My Choice these days http://blog.takemefishing.org/shanty-town/#.VHVZTYvF8jM

and food for thought

Grits eaters wasn't meant to be an insult. Just an old saying I picked up from my drill sarge. He used to line us up every morning.

One day it was yankees to the left and rebs to the right. Next day it might be hippies to the left country boys to the right.

Most of the times he used term found on those ahem questionable sites. Another saying he had .That used to make us laugh " i am not a bigot. I hate everyone with an equal passion.

By the way I ate grits while I was in the service. Danny Jones form Live Oak Florida used to tell me. You shore know how to mess up some good grits. I thought it was the best "cream of wheat " cereal I ever ate. Ate them with milk and sugar.

Grits were made to pile on the middle of the plate, top with a pat of butter, 2 fried eggs and 2 strips od bacon on the side, salt, pepper a liberal dose of hot sauce, couple of fresh cathead biscuits and you have a meal fit for a king!

I like the way R. Lee Ermy stated it in "Full Metal Jacket":

I will 2nd that one .. The 2 over easy eggs go on top of the grits.

That Ice fishin looks like fun for some one else ... to cold for me .. They really had some big old "eyes" and more people out there than what lives in my neck of the woods.
