Got friends and 2 nephews that work with hazardous waste. Some of the jobs require getting rid of lead......

Use to be able to get free wheel weights - not anymore in California.

I usually trade lead for different stuff.

One of the primary sources of scrap lead in HI was telephone cable sheathing. If you know any phone co. workers you might ask them.

I would advise against battery salvage as the acid is hazardous and there is very little useful metallic lead left in a dead battery.

Go to a tire shop and get led tire weights. Cut out steel keeper with a set of dikes. You're all set...trust me.

I used wheel weights at first, but was a pain to clean, and for the amount I use (not much), I find it easier to buy it already cleaned in ingots off ebay. Bought about 20 lbs for about 1.25 a lb, and will probably last me awhile. $25 isn't worth the trouble to melt and clean it, in my book.

ARj - Melt the WWs with the clips - the clips will float to the top and you can skim them off.

Not a real fan of WWs either - road salts, other contaminants, and have to watch out for zinc...

Batteries are not only dangerous - the yield is worth all the work. Leave them for the recyclers.
