What's the most offensively overpriced product you've seen for fly/jig fishing?

I'm sure we've all seen the hair and dubbing combs that cost $15 at the fly shop and $3 at the cosmetics counter labeled as mustache and eyebrow combs. Here's one that really takes the cake, though...

I was at Fred Meyer's this evening and decided to check the fishing aisle to see if they had anything on sale. Sometimes they have really good prices on clearance. For those outside the area, it's a big box chain similar to Wal-Mart. They have a single aisle for fishing gear, with a small number of fly fishing items. Someone might stop there to pick up common items they forgot at home if it's too early or late for the dedicated shops to be open. I saw these "strike indicators" and it made me really annoyed.

For those not familiar with northwest fishing styles, those little egg shaped things are made by a local tackle company called Beau-Mac. They're called Cheaters and made from styrofoam. They're normally used for drift fishing for salmon and steelhead and come in several sizes and a million, billion colors. Lots of local stores carry them in bulk bins for about $0.15 to $0.20 each depending on the size. That means they're probably paying about 1/3rd to 1/2 as much wholesale to Beau-Mac. They come packaged in six packs for around $2. I'd estimate there's about $0.50 of product in this bag, for $4.50!

What's the worst ripoff example you've seen?

Flash, the Tinsel type and how much it cost. I use wide flash for big saltwater jigs. Cost a lot for a little swag of it at Barlows, or wherever. Found some at a craft store that will last a lifetime. It's meant to hang over your doorway and goes the whole way to the floor. Cost......$9.99 on sale. Don't know who would want to hang this stuff on a door though lol. Kind of 1960's retro.

Whiting Hackle!!!!!! I have some but it's out of the clearance bin. I used to get most of mine from Conranch Hackle but he's retired now and I haven't bought any from the guy he sold his business too.

The long dyed hackle feathers they are using as hair inserts or extensions in the fashion world. Have seen them go for $5.00 for one feather. That's outrageous!!!! What some will do to look up to date.

That's actually pretty cheap!!!! Local place that my nephews girlfriend took her daughter a year ago charged $13 plus the cost of the little clip. It's been dying down for a while, and hackle prices have come way down!!!!!!!!!

Will have to agree with Jig Man Fly rods are getting to be outrageous. There are still some out there that are very reasonable. Last one I picked up was a factory outlet store. Graphite composite 8 foot 6wt. Nice little stick for $20 with a $9.95 shipping charge. Every thing is getting to be more than we want to pay seems that money just doesn't go as far as it use to. Hard on those people with a fixed income.

Some folks need to look good doing things. I just prefer to be good at doing things. As far as fly rods, reels, etc... it should be about what each individual is happy using. I am sure many of us on here could fish circles around the folks that show up with a catalog worth of pricey gear strapped to their backs. And the fact that we are catching fish on lures and other equipment we've crafted ourselves is the biggest bonus in my book. I like nothing more than to see a big ole slab crappie roll on the surface or come up through a hole in the ice wearing one of my jigs in its upper lip. That is enough satisfaction for me whether on my rod or my son's or a friends. The fact that I made something that fooled a fish is an indescribable feeling.

i personally know a friend that spent 50 to 60 bucks on a Metz cape or something along those lines. For fly tying, i get how you may need that kind of feather, but jig tying?

people laugh at how much I spend on a rod and reel. I have some almost 1000 bucks. but I never worry about them falling while fishing a tournament.

Well, I spent $550 on a Sage flyrod, I've bought the $60 #1 grade Metz capes, and the small $60 Wheatley fly boxes. I'm sure there's more expensive stuff out there but I don't do much flyfishing anymore so I'll just hang onto it.

Basically anything that's from a fishing "shop" when it comes to tools for tying. Don't get me wrong, a lot of things ARE BETTER and would cut time down on the purtiness factor. But I'm not real particular and have found that it only costs me time. Would like to have em sometimes but other things are more important.
Plus I'm too purty for my own good already. :)

Gee, these days, if the tying material isn't sold at JoAnn's Fabric, it's way overpriced! Just wished JoAnns located some old fiberglass and sold rod blanks for under 10 bucks!!
