If you have a Harbor Freight close by go there and buy their powder paint. Black, white, yellow and red is all they offer but it is cheap and as good as the next if mixed well. Welcome aboard.

For starting out, while not the cheapest route, I'd go with the protec paints. Easy to use, no mixing, no having to add clear to lighten, no fuss, and already in a jar. Cheapest is to buy it by the pound from places like rosey's or Colombia coatings. But most need to be thinned with clear and they don't come in a jar. Fyi if you ever do but in large quantities never use baby food jars to keep you powder in. They will become next to impossible to open. I need a channel lock to open some that I have had a while.... do as you wish as this is just my 2¢

The best powder paint is the ones that are free. Go to your local auto body n paint joint. May not be "free" per say, but those cats buy in big quantities and will prob "give" you what need to get started

Thanks everyone I only ordered two jars of pro-tec powder paint. I ordered it off of Barlows tackle

Hope you have fun with it! I started when I was 14 as a hobby. now I'm 32 and have it as a business on the side that is becoming a real monster! Please don't be afraid to ask questions. I wish there was a site like this with all these great guys willing to help new people into the craft when I started out. The resources available here would have saved me a lot of time, money, and frustration!

I'm chiming in a bit late on this but....
Harbor Freight powders occasionally go on sale for 2.99 - 3.99 a pound regular price is 5.99 a pound. They only have 4 colors but elsewhere in this forum are tons of recipes to mix colors and create your own or create a color close to what you desire. Also, they have a really nice heat gun that occasionally sells at 6.99 (I know cause I just bought 2 of them). Have not had one go bad, but I have ruined 3 by dropping jigs inside of them and shorting them out.

Welcome to the madness called jig making - a subset of the addiction called fishing.

I'm small time & only tie for myself & friends along with donating to a few worthy causes like Hero's on the Water, Wounded Warriers, and local river conservation clubs.

A 2oz bottle of Protect paint works for all my needs.

I mainly buy ProTec paints as well. A 2oz. jar coats a lot of jigs. The more artistic you want to be requires more colors. Honestly, could get by with a minimum of maybe 6 or 8 colors..... but what fun would that be.

............an welcome to the forum from NW-Ohio. Glad to have you here.

Welcome to JigCraft.

This. :t-up::t-up::t-up:! I keep an eye on Rosey's Powder Coating's and they just started their Fall Sale. There are some great colors available (by the pound) for less than you'll pay for a 2oz jar from Pro Tec. Then, you might like to get in on a material swap or even trade with other tier's/painter's. It's good stuff.
