They look like flush cut gate cutters I think they are called. If sharp, they work great for the sprues. Here is the ones like that that I use.

Zuran cutters

There are several types there, but I'm pretty sure this is the size I have.

I have 2 pairs, and after 3 years or so of cutting sprues off of jigs 1/16 oz. to 8 oz., they are getting pretty dull. May need to order some.

How many sharpening will a bass pro shops sprue cutter go through before you need to replace them? Also, could you sharpen a pair of side cutting pliers with a diamond file(not steel) and use them as sprue cutters?

As far as sharpening a pair of cutters I do them with a piece of emery cloth glued to a piece of a hard wood stick. I start out with a course grit and then go to a fine one. You can do it with a emery board. Be very careful and keep the exact angle on both sides as they were and keep it even. With a pair of cutters if they are half way decent can be sharpened quite a few times with out any change in performance.
