Last Friday, I went fishing. Managed to bring home some nice catfish as well.

Apparently, I brought home something more than some catfish. My vehicle has been smelling like fish for days. Nothing truly rank, more like my cast net being still wet from the shad slime. Which was exactly what I thought it was, as my cast net was in the back, and with the humidity, hadn't really dried out.

Two days ago, I finally remembered to grab my net and put it on my front porch, to hopefully get it to dry out. It was dry already. OK, now what.

Well, yesterday, the clouds finally cleared out. Sure enough, my Traverse was still smelling like fish. Going from my day job to my night job, I realized that the little cooler I use to keep Shad fresh in was still in my car. Ok! That's probably it! I almost always dump my leftover bait, but there's still shad slime in there. Normally I rinse this little cooler out, and rinse off the gel ice packs, put the gel packs back in the freezer, and let the cooler air out.

I brought the cooler into the house (mistake #1). There are two zippers I have to undo, one to a pocket that houses one of the gel packs, the second to the main storage pocket, which has another gel pack and the offending slime. I opened both zippers (mistake #2). I grabbed the top gel pack, rinsed it off, and put it back in the freezer. I flipped open the lid to get a peek at how much shad slime I was dealing with (mistake #3).

Frak!!! There's still Shad in there! OMFG it stinks! I quickly closed that lid. It was open only a second or two. Immediately Laurie Kuntz-Morgan and a couple of our kids start going off about that unholy stench. I calmly and quickly took the cooler outside I disposed of the stinkbait and decided to retire that gel pack. I rinsed out the plastic bucket that goes into the cooler, and rinsed out the cloth cover for the cooler as well.

Hopefully my Traverse starts to smell better now....

It will get better. On at least four occasions, my previous vehicles became a grave for various bait fish. The first time, I was lucky enough to find the dead fish after a day or two. The last times, however, I found a mummified carcass under a seat. On those occasions, my vehicle smelled like fish for about a week, then got better.

Well, the good news is that it doesn't smell anywhere near as bad right now.

I've made stinkbait/sourbait before. SWMBO about killed me when she found out I had the jar in the fridge. I don't really see the need to make some stinkbait when I can catch all the fresh Shad I want in one or two throws of my cast net. That, and the best time for sourbait is shortly after ice-out, or at least early Spring. The next best time for stinkbait will be in the heat of summer, with bloodbait. I have some of that already.

Haha! I bet that did stink. Shad seem to have a strong scent even before they are dead and rotten. My wife has a nose like a blood hound some times and would probably let loose on me.

I've got a small lunch size soft side cooler thing that i use through summer with a blue freezer pack to keep worms cool on hot sunny days. One time, i forgot a couple dozen worms in it and they cooked in my car trunk for the rest of the weekend. Car was pretty ripe for the ride to work Monday morning. Another time, a jar of Gulp! juice did not get screwed down tight and all the liquid leaked out. It also got cooked in the trunk for a few days. Now every time the bag even starts to get warm from the sun it begins to let off an odor. Not sure which is worse, cooked worms or that canine anal gland smell of rotten Gulp! Car smelled both times but aired out quickly...... the cooler however has a permanent stench of sweet rotten death that does not go away. I am not allowed to bring it in the house.... it goes straight to the shed after fishing.

SWMBO and I do have separate cars. SHE just seems to think that SHE can tell me what I can and cannot transport in MY vehicle. Grrrrrrr.........

AF, we may be using the same soft-side cooler. Mine's a little $5 job from Wally World. Second one for me. First one got retired when one of my kids (with a scissors fetish) decided to cut the strap off..... Being that cheap, I might just retire this one and get another one.
