Being short on cash and long on time, I am thinking hard about making my own rotary vise. I searched the archives and did not find anything useful. Maybe I searched wrong.

Anyhow, my initial thoughts are to make a "T" type vise
my mandrel will be supported by ball bearings and my jaws will close with a lever on the side rather than thru the mandrel.

Does anyone have thoughts on making a vise or ideas that will make me happy someone else thought of?

Have one that i made at work a while back and used it one my lunch breaks...... 1" x 2" piece of wood, nuts, washers, & a threaded rod. None to fancy, but it does actually hold hooks well (tightened down with a hand wrench) and rotates.

There was also another posted a while back as a Boy Scout project of sorts.....

You're tackling a project that I wish I had the know-how and resources to accomplish. Kudos to you.

Gotta believe that something can be gleaned from exploded diagrams of rotary vises. Google sure is handy for this.

Hope that link works. There's even an electric rotary vise (patent applied for). Who'd have thunk that?

View attachment 4Here is a picture of mine it does not rotate but it gets the job done. The jaws are made from a pair of needle nose pliers with a thumb screw drilled through them.
