I've been using 3/0 uni thread for tying, and I'm not really very happy with it. It frays really easy and it's not very strong.

What should I switch to?

Use it quite a bit......how is your bobbin? I use 4lb fishing line also for a lot jigs (2lb breaks to easy and 6lb is to bulky). Take a spool from the fishing section at the store. 210 is another good choice.

Bobbin is probably the culprit, especially if 3/0 thread is fraying. Occasionally I'll get a bad spool of thread. I use Danville, Ultra thread and Uni thread and have tried the Veevus which ties a nice jig but is high priced. For my duck feather jigs I always use 70 ultra thread or 8/0 uni thread. Don't like a lot of thread built up at the head with the ducks.

Run a Q-Tip around the top and bottom of your bobbin , and look for fuz . Can't beat Danville or UTC in my opinion .

Out here...
210 flat wax is a good thread to start with. Unless your tying small flies. After some practic you can move to the smaller thread. The 2lb mono is also a good option...

Uni 6/0 is plenty good and strong in my experience. Their 3/0 is larger and stronger. Excessive pulling pressure could account for your thread breakage, but not necessarily the fraying in my opinion. Put me in the camp for checking your bobbin.

I tie 80% of my stuff with Ultra or Danville 140 denier thread.... Some stuff I will switch to 210 (big) or 70 (smaller flies)
