Stopped in to visit my parents today. I was telling my mom that I had to stop and pick up some tying thread and stuff from the fly shop on my way home. She told me she had just got a good deal on a bunch of embroidery thread on ebay but she said for some reason it wouldn't feed or work right on her machine. Said if I could use it for jigs I could have it. This stuff ain't really worth a dang on anything real small but will work fine on a lot of the stuff I tie. I only wish they were wrapped on smaller spools. Anyone know if a basic bobbin be stretched out to use on these wider spools? is there anyplace where one could buy some empty spools

I spool thread from odd-sized spools onto empty spools that are held easily by my winding bobbins. I don't like to force anything into my tying equipment. To me, it's not worth the fuss and expense of replacement or repair.

I'd try eBay for empty spools, then fabric and craft stores. You might get a better deal off of eBay. I've found empty spools at yard sales where sewing and craft items are advertised (use Craigslist to find them). Many are older wooden ones. Thrift stores sometimes carry them grouped into in packages with assorted sizes. The number of spools per package and size will vary. Basically, yard sales and thrift stores are hit or miss.

One other thing, I hope that few, if any, of those spools contain embroidery thread that is 100% Rayon. Those will be weak threads and you should apply minimal pressure to wrap with them in my opinion.

The best embroidery threads for tying are comprised of trilobal polyester (40-wt.) or a combination of 60/40 nylon to polyester (metallic thread 40-wt.). One-hundred percent polyester threads are acceptable, though not as desirable as the trilobal polyester or 60/40 threads. Still, they are better than 100% Rayon in my experience.

That is a very nice spool rack.

Andy nice score but x2 with Pup on the thread pressure. I have some of it and I'd use your regular black thread for the tying and use the embroidery thread as a cover over it

You might be able to find some empty spools, but with that many it's probably best just to get a larger bobbin. Magnum bobbins run around $8 to $13 on ebay, depending on the brand.
