I remember seeing them in stores back in the 90s. Didn't see the commercial until it first popped up online a few years ago, but even just seeing the box made me do a double take.

I have a headless gutted trout in the freezer if someone wants to give me their Wunder Boner to test. :D

Seriously, I've cleaned a lot of trout and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work on smaller fish. Their bones are thin and flexible and the flesh is pretty soft and oily. Especially fresh from the hatchery (which is why I don't eat a lot of trout.) Once you get into the bigger fish, they have pin bones that aren't connected to the spine so you would need to remove those by hand anyway.
