I recently received some very nice unfinished jig heads and spinner baits from Ron Don, so I decided to work with the jig heads this weekend. Here's what I've come up with so far, the Bug-Eyed Wooly Fishhead.

fishhead006.jpg

Materials:
  • Low-temperature glue gun with clear glue sticks to form 3-D eyes
  • Hole punch - 1/4-in. diameter
  • Tin foil
  • Black acrylic paint for eye pupils
  • A 3/16-ounce "fishhead" jig with a 1/0 black nickel sickle hook (I think... ;))
  • UTC Ultra Thread 140 denier - olive
  • Flymasters Wapsi Flashabou Accent - red
  • Clover Natural Wool Roving - moss green and ash
  • Maybelline Express Nail Polish - go go green (jig head)
  • Sally Hansen Hard As Nails - cardinal (gills and back of jig head)
  • Devcon 2T Epoxy for topcoat

The new-to-me style of jig head inspired me to seek and try out a different type of hair. I like the way it formed and looks around the hook. It appears relatively dense. I hope that it has good action. Being dense, the hair certainly forms a nice profile.

Wool absorbs water and sinks like a rock. So, this jig will be used for swimming and hopping. The key here will be limited stopping time.

The 3-D eyes are new to me as well. I crafted my own using pointers from David Jaroscak. You can find them in this link.

My thanks go out to Ronny for supplyng me with the samples. :)

Wow, that bug eye look is impressive. I like the forward position of the hook eye, & the heavy Sickle hooks.

Pup, how do you get such a perfect taper with your hairs?

Wow Pup! Now Im actually glad I forgot to send eyes for those heads! You spent some time on that jig but it was well worth it. Thanks again for the creative spinnerbait names.

Thank you all for your kind words and comments. :)

Hawn,
The taper is the result of cutting away two equal lengths/widths of the two colors of wool from my bunch. The wool is different in that I do not cut it from a hank or swatch. I tie the lengths in at the collar and use my left thumb, middle, and index fingers to pinch the fur and then stroke it back to a point. I use a small comb to smooth the hair. Often, loose hairs are removed during this process. Sometimes, I'll use cuticle scissors to trim the hair in order to create a better taper if I'm dissatisfied with the outcome.

Great job Pup. I bet that one took a while to make. It would be a shame to get it wet and mess that perfect hair-do up. LOL Beautiful jig.

Very cool. Looks like a lot of work though... better make some spares. You'll be filleting fish for a long time.
