So I was talking with a friend in Kentucky about 1/8 to 1/4 oz jigs to hunt big fish. Does not use anything less than 1/8. So I tried something a little bigger with 1/8 and added additional hook based off a fly tie web page.

Thoughts? Anybody tried it before? Overall is about 3" long.

Hello P-Boater - I haven't tried that config but, I commonly use jigs approaching 3" and never use a jig < 1/8 ounce. I fish lakes around Ft. Smith, AR - Blue Mt., Kerr Reservoir and Wister lake primarily. It's funny about some who believe smaller jigs are the ticket for crappie. How many times have you cleaned crappie with shad doubled up in their gut? I have caught small crappie only fractionally larger than the big jigs I use so the little guys eat them too. I use a number of techniques depending on the time of year - cork and jig up to 12' deep, tight line and spider rigs but most always those BIG jigs are in play.

Nice ties and interesting concept that I will be replicating.

I haven't tried it personally, but I have a friend here in KY also that will only use 1/16 and up for the big pigs in Dale Hollow. He only used the 1/16 for float n fly and usually is jigging a 1/4 to 1/2 oz jig. He does catch big fish. He is also very picky as to his colors, mostly chartreuse, olives and grays.
I do like the look of the extra hook, and it certainly oould aid in missing those short hits. Below are a couple pics of the bigger jigs I tie. I'm told I get them to thick, but then again they are catching fish on them. These are 1/4 and 3/8 oz and most are around 3 inches long. So your size is a good length. I also tie a lot of 1/4 oz for my friend in deer hair only. I also only use caribou hair on my big jigs for the belly color, they tell me it is better than the deer for realistic action. They could, I suppose, just be blowing smoke about that, and they do like to tell the other guys on the water that they use a special custom jig tied in caribou.

AR Jigger...you need more step by step pictures let me know. I used 20lb fluro for second hook....only thing I had! A lot of satin and looking forward to breaking this out. I think we will have open water in about three weeks.

Weed guards work fine, as you can see I leave them long. That is per request for my guys that use them, they trim to their desire. They really prefer the poison jigs, they look good, but dang, they are pricey to buy.

We here in Kansas use both large and small jigs. Have used jigs weighing 1/4-3/8 at times depending on wind and the mood of the fish. Fall through early spring is big bait time around these parts when all the forage in the lake is good size.

Very good tye. I use small and large jigs for crappie but most around here wants 1/16. I have told them they need to try 1/8 and even 1/4 at times but wasting my time telling em...
