Tail Spins

Seeing all these interesting spinner style jigs lately... i couldn't resist, but i did them a little different than what i have seen here. i left off the traditional tail of a crappie jig and tied in the spinner instead. made them up yesterday and have not even had a chance to throw them in water yet to see if they actually do what i hope they will - i do like the way they look though!

Very cool jigs. Did you tie the swivel in? I've been thinking about a tail spinner with a tail,but thought a tail would keep the blade from spinning.I just might try something like that and see how it works.

Years back,legendary Smallmouth/slider fisherman Charlie Brewer introduced his "Whirley Bee" lure,even before his Slider worm. It was a tiny soft plastic grub body with a tail spinner. As Charlie promised,it caught EVERYTHING that swam, for me, tho I never cared for the plain looking plastic body. Now YOURS features a really cool colored & tied body,much better hooking, and a very artistic,realistic jighead ; this new lure should slay 'em!!(years later I saw a super hot "secret weapon" lure by a well known Wisconsin muskie man,where he removed a plastic lizard's twister tail and threaded in a tail spinner to replace it ; catch rate SOARED!!).

Now I'm convinced that I need to make some of these. The whirly bee that I've seen has a little red bead that appears to hold the swivel on.Anyone know where I might get some?

Attica's new creation had me thinking today - it reminded me that my friend ,Steve, at bouncerflies.com has detailed instructions for making a prop tailspin on his site that could fit right in with AF's jig tying idea ; Steve's already great catch rate went skyhigh when he started tying prop spins into his flies! And recently I've used an unusual but HIGHLY effective spin blade where this concept would benefit -called a Smile Blade from www.macklure.com .

RD - Yes, that weave was a fun one... red/orange crystal twisted on top and white on bottom. :beat-up: That's pink AND chart! First of a few 'bright' color combos i will be making, have a pile of pink, orange & chart heads.

JJ1 - I did tie the swivel to the hook. Right at the first bend of the hook and just made 1 wrap over it with the chenille to hide the lump a little. I looked through my catalogs... only thing i could find was the stinger hooks they use alot for walleye. It had a simple swivel with the top loop coated in some kind of vinyl so you just push the hook point of the jig through. I actually thought they were some kind of rubberbands! Haha. If you find something that works, please post, i am planning to get some more of these spinners.

I did get a chance to try the top jig just to see how it worked. The blade spun PERFECT! The whole way down the blade spins and does not make the jig spin, was worried about that. i did try tipping it with a chunk of worm and it DID spin/twist the jig on the fall... oh well. No fish pics yet, was chasing gills that day and it was a little big for them. Pics will have to come another day..........

After seeing AF's tailgunners I had to tie some up myself,hook sizes are 2-6. Even made a few double spinners. Will try them out tommorrow.

Nice ones jungle! Whats the size on the 3rd pic? Pills or rounds with eyes? Yall get out there and catch something on these spinner-butts! Ha i like that name.

The third pic is a 1/32 ballhead that was flattened a bit to hold the eye. Hook size is a #2. I like some weird size combinations. I'm sure gonna try these. Getting down in the 50's tonight,crappie are moving shallower. I'll start deeper and use these when I try the shallows.

Jungle, Those are beautiful!! I used some later versions of the Brewer whirley bee,where they used a tiny willow blade ,as you do in the fourth pic (think it was called "Charley Bee") ; these where amazingly successful for trout and crappie! Yours may get BANNED in some waters, from being too effective!

JJ1 - Those are very cool. That double spinner is very impressive looking but twice the hardware involved - would hate to loose that one!!! Thinking these may be good for the spring crappie bite, the ones i made with the wider colorado blades seem to slow down its fall alot. Interested to hear how you did with them today, i am hopefully gonna try mine out a little more tonight with some late night yak trolling.

I have used it for making stinger hooks.Can will go along way and will last awhile if you put foil on the top before replacing the lid.

Tim,that looks like it would work for dipping one end of a crane or roller swivel in it and sliding it into place. I've been crimping mine with pliers and tying them in at the bend.. AF,great idea. These are impressive baits. Six of my eight keeper crappie were caught on a tailgunner.Every bait caught fish,around 15 in the last 2 hours. Only two were caught on a steady retrieve,both nonkeepers. When I stopped the retrieve and let the baits drop the blades continue to spin and they would nail it. The Indiana blades definitely worked better today then the willow baits. A fast jigging retrieve picked up a few as well. Those fish hammered it. The top bait was the first picture with the third one a close second.I didn't try the double blade bait.It started to get hot. I didn't feel like cleaning fish so I gave them to an elderly couple who was tickled to get them. Keepers were 10-11 inches,not monsters but nice for around here. I tied a dozen more tonight and I'm not stopping until I fill up a box. They work better than any r--dru--er I've ever used. Oh,and that palmer chenille really brightens up the baits,very impressive stuff.I'll be getting more for sure next week.

Fishhunter - Thank you for posting that. I have a Netcrafters catalog and did not see that! Sounds like just the stuf... think i'm gonna have to get some, makes me wonder if thats the stuff they use to clump together the 'fishhair' fiber you can buy. hmmmmm.

JJ1 - Excellent report, sounds like you had a good day! The willow blades might be better suited for river fishing with some current, may help the blades spin a little easier?

I got out and fished with mine last night. Only 2 keepers but one did come on a tailgunner - i like that name too!! - it was on the green/gray one with the bigger blade in my last pic. Also got a crappie on it that was barely longer than the bait! haha. Gonna be making me a few more too.

Well I decided to jump on the bandwagon. This is my take on the concept. I call them Tail Swagger Jigs. This is a 1/4 oz darter with a #1 red sickle that I powder coated. I used a #1 Whiptail blade. I have not live tested them but they look nice.
