Although I have been accumulating supplies for several months, I constantly find something missing. This got me thinking that a materials shopping list for getting started would have been a handy thing to have. Hopefully, some more experienced folks will be able to help expand my list which recently was augmented with a bunch of items that fell in the I wish I had category. My list is as follows:

Tools
Vise sturdy - Fixed or rotating but prefer rotating
Bobbins - a few to start but eventually you want 1 for each color of thread.
Scissors - A pair of really nice, sharp fly tying shears or scissors (with man sized finger holes)
Whip Finisher - I have 2 but have not really mastered either
Jig Rack!
Good Light for work area

Materials (consumables)

Feathers
Maribou strung or loose, loose is a better bargain but more likely to have smaller feathers not a problem with small jigs
Blue, Fluorescent Cerise, Black, Fluorescent Chartreuse, White, Wine
Bagged feathers
Black, White, Chartruese, Yellow, Blue Plus a couple bags mixed colors
Duck Wings, capes (Bonus from duck hunting)
Pheasant wings, capes (Bonus from pheasant trip)

Buck Tails
Blue, White, Red, Black

Craft Fur
Black, Brown. White, Blue, Chartruese Yellow, Hot Pink

Sillilegs
Clear Hologram silver Flake, Hot Chartreuse, Hot Pink, White, Blue, Black

Flash
Crystal Flash Gold, Crystal Flash Silver
-Crystal Flash Dark Green

Head Cement - touch ups
Sally Hansons Hard As Nails FN polish in clear for cement and assorted colors. Some of the neons and glow colors are interesting.

I know my list is incomplete, but I got tired of running to hobby lobby, Michaels and bps to find a single item or 2 for a project. Additionally going online, I was able to find items that were 2.50 - 3.50 range for .50 - .75 cents.

I will try to clean up a document after all suggestions are made and prepare something that can be made availalbe to all but especially those who are just starting out.

Looking Forward to comments

I'd get some monofilament thread. You can buy it from just about any store that caters to people who sew. It comes in 400 yard spools and costs about $3. I use it for just about all my tying. It's clear so it blends in. Only drawback is it's really slick, so you want to use head cement.

As far as other stuff, I'd add a pack of dark green krystal flash. I tie a lot with chartreuse tails and that's usually the color flash I use. Shows up really well. Wang sells packs of 16 assorted colors on eBay for $10 + $3 shipping. I don't think you're going to find a better deal than that. He combines shipping with other items too.

While you're browsing Sam Wang's eBay store, pick up some 3D Holographic Eyes. You can start like I did with the package of 1200 in 3 colors. 400 each of Red, Silver & Gold. Unless you tie a lot of real small stuff (smaller than 1/16oz) I'd start with the 4mm. Perfect for 1/16oz heads & easy enough to center on larger heads.

If you haven´t got used to a whip finisher yet anyhow, I strongly recommend to spare it and learn how to hand whip finish. One day you`ll tie a jig that has too big a head to reach over with a whip finisher. You tube has plenty of tutorials on the issue.

Varnish is an issue. Sally hanson´s hard as nails is badly overprized over here but its terrific stuff. I use it as a tying varnish and also seal all my 3D eyes with a double coat. You might want a needle to apply it on smaller patterns`s head knots. Bigger ones, especially booly bead bases are great to seal with UV glue. Got both thick and thin Loon UV Fly finish. Its expensive but lasts a long time. I have yet to empty one. Their lamps are a fraud however, you can cure that stuff well with a cheap blue chinese laser pointer from e-bay.

Wanna powderpaint? Get yourself an aquarium air pump, a dozen flexible plastic jars, glue a pipe into one of them, cut out the other one´s bottoms, glue in laboratory grade filter paper instead and get yourself a "plug-and-play" fluid bed station.

Thanks for this list, KDog. I'm just getting started and there are so many pieces and parts that go into it. I just said last night that I wish someone would make up a list of what's needed to get started. And here it is!

Marabou fluffs are much easier to use and more cost effective than strung - really depends on the size of jigs you are tying.

Mono threads in smaller sizes are a good thing to have - for smaller tyes.

Fingernail polish (Sally's hard as nails)
krazy Glue for base starting thread
Go with 3D eyes suggested above
