Well I don't know how to qualify this trip. Went out for crappie and walleye first couple of spots only produced 2 keeper crappie ( 10" or plus ). Second spot was a total bust. Third spot on Berlin Lake was hit at about 11pm . Soon as I turned the vexilar on I knew I was on something big and lots of them. To my chagrin they were a highly undesirable species. White bass to me are second to third rate table fare they do provide a sporting fight on light tackle. From 11:pm to 3:30am the action was so fast and furious that I boated well over a 100 fish. I did manange to catch another 10 decent crappie and some 3 undersized walleye ( under 15 " ) but the rest of the fish were all white bass ranging in size from 11 inch to 16 inches in size.. I don't think the drag on my ultra light Okuma will ever be the same.

They hit everything I put into the water. Only two requirements between 14-17 foot deep and had to be moving the faster the better. Every jig I tried worked and it was almost like those old tuna fishing methods. My 7' ultralight rod strained to lift the 15-16 inchers into the boat.

To get my lunch down I actually had to take my rods out of the water for 15 minutes. I released all the white bass and came home early about 6am in morning. With only 12 fish ( the crappie ) for the freezer. Wife seen me cleaning them and said you stayed all night for that little bit of fish ?

To add to my puzzlement I have fished this spot reguarly for over 15 years. I think the most white bass I ever caught in one day there was like 5 or 6. I can't remember ever catching double figures of that species before at this spot.

Sounds like a fun day to me...

I do put whites behind Crappie and Walley on the dinner plate, but I think are still pretty good eating and lots of fun to catch when you can find them schooling....

Ive got a couple good recipes for them if you want to try something new.
