So Cal I.E.
Thnx qk for the extra fly. Got this LP Bluegill on my second “cast”. I think it’s phenomenal, considering my fly fishing skills are very sad and it's my first BG on a fly.

I was using a Cabela’s LST 664-2 with G Loomis adventure 3, floating line 4wt set up with a 5X tippet. Not sure if this set up is good for 8” and 9” Bluegill or Redear.

Awesome!! That fly has accounted for many many bluegills coming home to dinner.
The setup you mentioned will definitely work for gills. 5x tippet is about right. You fish light line a lot from what I've seen, so you know how to fight 'em without breaking that lighter tippet.
I fish that fly anywhere from 1 to 3 feet under a strike indicator and just cast it out and let it set 99% of the time. Mostly I'm casting to weed bed edges, and those fish see the plop of the indicator and then that fly just dangles in front of their noses.... can't resist that!

I'm looking forward to seeing more pics from ya, Led!

Thanks guys. As soon as I have a bit of spare time, I will be doing a step-by-step on how to tie it for Fly Anglers Online's "Fly of the Week". If they deem it worthy, I'll post a link to the article.

If FAOL doesn't take the step-by-step..... i will!!!!!!!!! I can easily find a spot for it in the tutorials here. I had caught a few fish on the same fly about 2 weks ago - have to get the pics off my camera, keep forgetting. A crappie liked it as well. I'll post it here, try to (remember) do it tonight.

Led - My rod is a 5wt and use just a 2lb. mono leader - they are fun on it so a 3wt should be even better. Wait till you hook a 3-4lb. bass!!

Sorry again for the delay - this was from around 2 weeks ago. I caught these 2 keepers (the crappie was 12.5", didnt measure the gill) before it started getting dark just casting with no indicator and using very slow line strips. Right at dusk, fish started feeding like crazy on the surface and i switched up to a surface fly. Unfortunatley the surface feeders were all dinks. :dodgy: Thinking back, i should have switched to a popper/dropper and might have still picked up the bigger fish. Will try it next time.

The trip before these i was catching both crappie and gills on a sub-surface mini craft clouser, so perhaps i should stick with the under water flies.

Led, I bought a size 18 version of a Birds Nest in a fly shop down by Beaver Lake in Arkansas in September. That night, I was messing around at the vise trying to come up with something a little different that was dark-colored and buggy for bluegill fishing.
So it's a variant of that Birds Nest pattern. Up til now, I've been calling it... "that little black and purple Birds Nest-lookin fly that I tie". LOL! How's that for official?
