Local shoreline species here have "Hawaiian Punch". Here's what a mere 4# or so ho'u (hoe-ooh) just did to a 3/8 oz. 1/0 heavy wire Sickle jig. Solid "Toadfrog" paint job - look at the rock/teeth abuse it survived.

Sorry, generic pic of ho'u as I shoreline trek alone without cam or phone. Have a .33mp(yes 1/3) Mavica for internet pics at home but fish was released.

Hey Hawn,

An old USAF buddy of mine just got stationed back in PA. I was meeting him yesterday for lunch... can you imagen 2 old grizzled Staff Sergeants sitting around and talking about the "good o'l days" .... anyways, I had to ask; "Well, Ted. You were at Hickham for a few years I bet that took the old sails out of your trout flyfishing due to the fact you were surrounded by the saltwater."

He said, "No... I flyfished for trout. Hawaii has a trout stream, with rainbow trout!! We even have a chapter of Trout Unlimited on the island."

Hawn, is this true? Or was he yanking my chain?

Yep they have them, only reason I know is there's a guy from there on one of my fly tying sites. I believe they're only on Kauai though

The only public trout water is on Kauai - there's an upland rubber lined reservoir with stockers open just a short time annually with more applicants than permits available I understand. In the same area of Koke'e is also a trek down into a valley wild trout stream which has a fragile population of introduced bows which somehow managed to acclimate to tropical habitat. Used to be a pay per oz. trout farm pond on the windward side of Oahu - not sure if its still in bizness. My cuz says trout were stocked in a remote upland Kaumana stream(Big Island) long ago, but no one else has confirmed this. So, I've never caught a trout in HI personally - Koke'e is many islands and $300 airfare distant from my Big Island home.

Its possible that there are trout in upland Central Oahu off-limits military reservation land, but I've never heard.

Hawaii is actually perfect for tucunare(peacock bass) but our perpetually underfunded Dept. of Land & Natural Resources has abandoned stocking programs.
