Works on big smallies too! This is my biggest one yet at 17.5". Didn't get a chance to weigh him, but the length charts I've seen estimate around 3.3 pounds. Caught this one at night at a local park. My phone's battery was almost dead and I couldn't use the flash, but luckily the bathroom was well lit!

I caught it in the Snake River in the slack water right below one of our local reservoirs. It may have grown up in the river or in the res and swam through the dam. I have caught tagged trout in this area that were released in the reservoir, so I know it's possible for fish to escape downstream and live.

Tailwaters generally offer decent angling for wash down survivors as long as the outflow doesn't look like this one at Lake Mcconaughy in NE.
