That ain't all of em Happy - those were the ones I hadn't sorted yet from the original buy. I have two other box's 1000 each of EC fly tying hooks from the 80's that need to be sorted too!!! I thought I had all my fly tying hooks in one place but I've been finding other fly tying hooks in other box's and thought I had everything done!!! NOT!!!LOL I'll post a pic of them later.

Tell me about it - when I do sickles I have my molds out and I dry fit the hooks to make pouring go quicker. Ones that don't fit in one mold sometimes fit in another.

If I wasn't such a coward I'd elongate the eye circle and not worry about it anymore.

I used to dry fit, but now I take a correct size hook and lay it on my work table with the shank straight along the top edge of a horizontal thin metal ruler. Then I place my (90*) hooks eye leg against eye leg to separate out the short and/or long legs ones into respective piles. Also have my wire bending pliers to straighten twisted eyes or points as well as off angle legs.

Good stack of useable hooks :) I use a lot of 10 and 12's, I have some smaller hooks but I try not to use em much as the eyes don't see those real small hooks to easy.

Just occurred to me, why do they need to be sorted? Are there mixed sizes or bad hooks? Are you counting them by hand?

I sort them so if I ever do trades they're all done and being in the little bags is alot easier than trying to get a hook untangled from a 1000 in a box.

No mixed sizes - and I look for any bad ones when I sort them.

Yes I sort them by hand!!! I do piles of 5 each then into piles of 10, then 50 then 100. and bagged up. I traded Jim 50 ea of two sizes of hooks, so I had to sort some out anyway I just finished the whole batch. The small 4 mil zip bags make for easy storage without taking up alot of room in by box.

Might be off a few for tiny #10s & 12s, but weighing out hundred lots is lots quicker. I use an Ohaus triple beam balance scale, but the electronic ones might be more accurate. Maybe your local Police Dept. might have some confiscated from purveyors of reality enhancers?

Would "purloined from degenerate intoxicant exploiters" be clearer?

Shame on you FM - police are our friends. Or was it fiends?

Just joking, law enforcement is a tuff job that someone has to do.

Hey Doug,
I would like to ask a stupid question. I know that there are wet flies and dry flies correct? Wet flies sink and dry flies float correct? So on your hook boxes in post #8, I see it is written wet and dry. Are there differences in wet and dry hooks as well and if so what is the difference? I'm just trying to educate my self. Thanks.

The biggest difference is in the thickness of the wire. The dry flies are a lighter wire and with dry fly hackle it helps them float on the water, Where the wet fly hooks are heavier and yes sink.

Now if you put enough hackle on a wet fly hook you could float it.
