Just as I was getting home today I noticed strangers a couple of houses over. The house has been vacant for about 6 months. The people who had it lost it because they were unable to keep up with their land contract.
They had left three horses behind when they moved out.

Every now and then I would notice someone over there taking care of the horses. So I ASSUMED that they were being taken care of. This is why I am so upset. I should have checked closer. The people who had to move and were the owners of the horses seemed pretty normal to me.

At 66 years of age I have always prided myself on not being involved in other peoples business. But there are two things that really get my anger up. Those two things would be child abuse and animal abuse.

Sent wife in with our tax forms as we were returning home of having taxes done. Then I noticed lettering on side of one van ASPC and the other Angels for Animals. Wife and I watched the news as they showed how skinny these poor horses are. Some neighbor lady noticed and heard the horses and went to check on them. She then called the authorities.

Evidently whoever had been taking care of them stopped. I am totally ashamed of myself that I did not ever go to check out the situation. No excuse other than I would never have imagined these people doing something like this. Wife and I had not heard the horses whinny in quite awhile and ASSUMED someone had finally moved them. We also thought with real estate agent showing the property now and then. They would notice if something was that wrong.

The barn the horses were in is about 200 yards from my fly and jig tying outbuilding. I can only promise myself that if a similar situation arises in the future . I will check it out for myself.

The one big worry is my temper though. Because I fear I would be enraged enough to actually want to really hurt those responsible. Maybe the Good Lord realized my weakness and kept me safe.

All I know I am going to be feeling rather crappy for awhile.

Been there, it is harder when you try to get it done the right way. Things gotta get really bad before the authorities can do anything.

So, you feed and care for the animals and something goes wrong, you are responsible,
You watch as the animals begin to suffer and call the authorities. Minimums are met, their hands are tied
Finally you see an animal unable to fend for itself, you call the authorities, they euthanize the helpless animal, warn the owners that conditions are not quite adequate. Then you notice another animal going down and call the authorities and maybe this time, something gets done.

I would add wife beaters to that list - or people who abuse women.

I've learned when my temper snaps, to go to the brain first before I go with brawn or lead.

Can't beat yourself up Bill - too bad you can't beat up the a$$s that abandoned the horses.....

How or why some people can do that is beyond understanding. There is a special place in hell for them - they just can't get there quick enough.
