Had to put him down today at 12 years old. He was my daughters best friend and real live dress up companion. She is taking it very hard. :(

She even had him immortalized for her 9th birthday.

He was a faithful watchdog....

He was MY companion. Staying with me wherever i went. Slept where my left leg should have gone every night. My water hauling helper even though i had to lift him in and out of the passenger seat of the truck on each load. He would howl if i did not take him. Liked his shot of beer i would give him on occasion so much he would drool for it. My 70lb. lap dog. Very sad day. :'(

What a f'd week for that matter, be glad to see it be done and far behind.

Buddy sorry to hear that I know how much it tears you up doing it. But the memories will help you through the first couple months and last forever.

Attica,

My heart goes out to you.

About four years ago my wife & I put our dog down. He was 16 1/2. First time I've ever had to do that and it was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. Don't get me wrong, I loved my Mom, and when she died, that was tough, but putting my dog down hurt me in ways loosing my mother never did.

Took us three years to decide to get another dog, and we got a rescue. Took another 6 months for that rescue to figure out were were his parents & become part of the family. For the last six months, my wife & I realized we shouldn't have waited as long as we did to get another dog.

My advise is to not make the mistake we did.

So sorry to hear about Rosco. I know the pain that you and the family are going through. Our pets become part of our family and they become so special to us. If you remember I had to go through the same thing in March with our 12 year old. It was hard and then my wife surprised me with another buddy that I named Rosco. I remember you talked about your Rosco then. My thoughts are with all of you.

I'm sorry for your loss. They are family.. I lost one a couple years ago and it hurt so bad I swore I wouldn't get another and go through that again. This summer I was talked into another and he's the second son I wanted but didn't have. I think I'd get another soon. It will help everyone get through this difficult time.

I'd seen this before and after I had my lab put down my Vet sent me this

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thank you for all the kind words. Out of the whole family...... my wife is taking it the hardest now. She works at home and was with him pretty much all day - every day. Daughter and son both hung some pics i printed in their rooms and can look at them and smile. My daughter even has a few videos of him on her Nintendo DS. 12 years of happy times makes me smile as well.

We did have a talk at dinner about getting another. The household is together - it will happen. Damn animals.

Russ - Best thing you can do for the hurt get another dog. Worst thing you can do is get the same breed of dog. One can't help but compare and the new dog will always suffer in the comparison. No advice on any particular breed. Just make sure different from Rosco.

I have never liked poodles and still don't. But one wormed his way into my heart. He was a 7lb midget that was supposed to be a miniature. Wife hand fed him until a year old.
He was supposed to be her dog yet for some reason he picked me. He was my constant companion but did not like fishing trips. He guarded my truck with all the ferocity that 7 lb could muster. He was probably the ugliest dog I have ever owned. But he did not think so as he would '" stand tall " when any female was within 50 yards. He came from by sister who was a champ poodle breeder. Normally breeders put down midgets so as not to taint the gene pool. My sister could not even think about doing that. He was also the smartest dog I ever owned. He had over 30 toys and each had a name.He would fetch whatever one you asked for. I was the only one he would do tricks for. People would stare at me in disbelief when told about his smarts. When they were visiting at the house I would get Kareem to show off his litany of stunts.

His full name was Kareem Abdul Jabbar because he acted like a 7 ' basketball star. Not too many days go by that I recall one or another of his antics. So bud, I know exactly how you feel. Time won't cure but it will help.

Yeah, I agree. But it accelerates the healing process.
