Apparently, the Ridley's Kemp sea turtles have returned to nest at Padre Island National Seashore after a 30 year absence!

Turtles are cool - yesterday at the end of a 3 mile ruff trail fishing trek we saw what appeared to be a family of green sea turtles napping in the sun on a rock shelf. Two big uns and a tyke. Had to pass within a few feet of em to get to a casting area and none of em stirred. Was tempted to pet one, but not sure that's polite. Big turtles I understand may be well over 100 years old!

Trip was a skunk - you mainland guys would be utterly surprised how one can fish all day in isolated areas here and not catch a dang thing worth keeping. We're not duffers either - partner Gero is an expert big game shoreline jigger and I've had over 50 years of practice pitching jigs. We pounded all castable areas over a 2 mile stretch of coastline and only saw 2 other guys fishing with set bait cast poles.

Just part of fishing!!! If we didn't strike out once in a while we wouldn't keep coming back for more.

Very cool the turtles are back!!!!!!

If anyone ever tells you that they don't ever get skunked even under ideal conditions at times...... they are flat out lying to you. Don't ever believe a fisherman. ;)

Sounds like a fun trip even if you came home smelling of the skunk. Three mile rough trail trek tho..... that sounds like a hike to make if you would have had fish to haul back with you. I am betting your had some beautiful scenery.

Here's the hike - highly recommended for active visitors to the Big Island. As you can see Hawaiian turtles aren't shy like their MO cuzzins. The three we saw were snuggled against each other and the little guy/gal in the middle was still around 50# or so.

Most of the time its Fishin ... and not Catchin
I have had a couple of trips lately just Fishin and very little Catchin
(thats what I get for being "Selective" about what I want to catch and what with ... R&D).

Good Video
