The first pix is a jig that the wool is formed by Red himself

The next pix is the jig I am tying for this demo

The next pic is flash is added in this case JoAnns fabric called purple lame paper. But it is a cloth.Fiber are achieved same as the satin.

Next is the finished jig with the satin fibers. Note the length of the satin. red says this is important.

Next is what I use to color my mono thread or any thread that I wish to add color to. This is optional Red does not use but I do on almost all my jigs.

Next is a pix of are some of the different flash fibers I use. they are mostly bought at fabric stores. the two types I have been using these wool jigs are pearlescent which give like a holographic flash and prism of colors To the paper lame in gold , silver and purple.

Next are some jigs I have tied of this style. In the middle is one of Reds originals.

This final pic shows where I was really screwing up. I was not adding enough of the satin fibers. The light blue box bottom left are all Reds originals. It is readily apparent that I was shortchanging the jigs on satin. Anyway both boxes are going to South Carolina with me.

I hope this helps some of you with some of your questions. One other thing make sure you use wool that holds water. Wool that barely holds water will not be nearly as effective.

For those of you who are thinking about trying these. Stumphunters tutorial video will prove to be a big help.

PP Do you wash your raw wool? I haven't been washing mine, just combing it out and it still feels really greasy. Most of my fibers are running in one direction they don't have that "nappy" look. I am going to wash some this weekend and see how it changes the texture of the wool by removing some of the lanolin.

readyone96- I am using washed wool. if you wash yours, use Dawn dish soap. The internet info says regular soap will cause felting.

Thanks Perch - I think I'm getting close seeing that one in the middle. Wow - Reds wool is alot different than the wool roving!!!

Where did you find the pearlescent material??? Never saw that in JoAnne's!!!

Thanks for all the help and info on these!!!!!!!!!! And give Red a big Salute too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

guys, I am seeing something that may be worth mentioning. some have mentioned that their satin is becoming tangled and knotted up on occasion. It looks like ole red is tying in his satin on the bottom of the jighead. In the vise it would be on top but when fished it would be on the bottom of the jig, opposite the hooks bend and point. I see alot of us me included tying the satin in on the side of the jig where the minnows lateral line would be, possibly making it easier to get fouled around the hook. let me know what ya'll think about this. It even looks like on some of red's jigs that both satin sides are tied in about the same place and each goes around to it's own side, this looks like a vee shape where they are tied in. my eyes ain't real good but just going by what I think I see.

ok, I just looked back at the verticle fishing master thread and one of the last posts was jiggerjohn pretty much saying this same thing, it does make sense to me. I do wonder how bad my flash fabric fibers will become entangled also, as I tend to lay some of those along the side of the jig. am going on vacation next week so maybe I can get my ole buddy to go fishing, if not I'll hit the pond by the house.

Papa, that is an impressive arsenal of jigs, and I know you know they will be productive. Looks like 2 different types of wool in your jigs - short kinky and more stretched out?

Hawnjigs- the light blue box is mostly wool jigs. The other box is just some of my older stuff. I am trying a little bit of everything on these wools. Some are thick and some are sparse. Even tied a few today using rabbit strip instead of wool. Speaking of wool I have tried raw unwashed wool , washed wool and roved wool and also typical commercial tying wool by couple different companies.

I am probably trying to re-invent the wheel here but experimenting is always part of the fun to me. Its like when someone took me sauger fishing for my first go at them. Told me bobber fishing would be a waste of time going after the Ohio River sauger. After catching a few his way bottom bouncing with a 1/16 oz jig tipped with a minnow. I tossed one rigged with a slip bobber. It did not catch sauger any better than the plain jig rig. But it caught just as many and eliminated 99% of snagging.

For those that don't know a sauger is a close relative of the walleye. It does not get as big but tastes just as good. A 7 lb around here is considered a whoopper. Mostly they run 12-17 inch.

That was a great demo Papaperch!!!! Like you I was really shot changing on the satin, I was just using a few strands to sort of seperate in the water providing movement but it appears the satin is a big part of the attraction while the wool keeps the shape. Well I now have something to work on, thanks again for that!!!
