Locally one of the Walleye Guru's has finally switched over to Ball head Jigs with wire Keeper. For 2 years, I've had them available and all I've heard is they are junk! I just smile and keep using them. Now however, its a different story and everyone wants them unitil... they are 15 cents a jig higher which I think is more than fair. Remains to be seen what they do.

Now to my real Rant of the day and probably the month. A buddy called this am and cannot get his boat started, Fresh gas, new plugs etc... I agreed to meet him at my barn and take a look see. Fuel filters looked filthy so step 1 replace. Took the filter off and out of the fuel line came a bunch of black balls loked like sand. (Last year I told him he needed new fuel lines). Looking that the filter I could see thru the center. I said something and he said "Oh Yeah, it was stopped up last summer and I cleaned it with an ice pick".

Pulled carbs and fuel pumps and as suspected full of deteriorated fuel line.
New fuel line - $35.00, New fuel Filters $8.00,

Carb and Fuel pump Kits 123 + 16 shipping. Labor to install undetermined, Still waitng on the cash, Boat is drying out in the barn.

Still not sure if I'm gonna gouge on cleaning the fuel pumps and carbs. But the expression on his face when I told him he was an idiot for unclogging the filter and lazy SOB for not changing fuel lines.. Priceless!

Enough said, tightwads abound and generous wallets are few and far between,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

1st KDOG remember U CAN'T FIX STUPID !!!
I would charge the man for the labor on the cleaning the pumps and carbs , you are doing this man a BIG ONE !
If he were to take it to a marine repair shop , they would bend him and drill'm and walk away with a :D on their face .
Round heads w/wire keeper fair price
Tear Drop w/wire keepers are a tad bit more .
Personally , when fishing plastics it's the only head I will use .

Usually, I charge a case of beer and some BS while working/troubleshooting. Not this time though. I spent 6 hours today and after a compressions check decided the heads had to come off. Borescope showed nothing in cylinders but compression was OK but not where it should be. Leaking head gasket was the culprit most likely caused by not retorquing the heads every year or so.

Picked up the parts locally this AM, had some in the shop as my fishing partner has the same motor. Basically, cleaned pumps and carbs, new gaskets and jets. New head gaskets and spark plugs, new fuel line and filters. During start up and run test noticed the water stream was very weak. Cussed a bit, ran it in my vineegar tank got better flow and a bunch of gunk out of the cooling system but not happy so Pulled lower unit apart and replaced impellor, All back together and good water stream, Runs good, idles good, cooling works well. New oil in Lower unit and new fluid for tilt/trim unit. Good to go except in 20 hours, head needs retorqued per manual. He showed up tonight with some money and I told him how much more was needed and told him what all was wrong.
He forked it over I about passed out. He asked when it would be done and I said it was finished.

He then told me a lot cheaper than the boat shop wanted and I did a lot more than they had quoted. Kinda a slap in the face for me, He got a quote then after suffering sticker shock asked me to get it running for him..... Ah well, what are friends for. Couple hours later he was back with a gift card to roadhouse and a case of BudLight.... I'm not quite as ticked but not happy either. Its not about the money, its more about not being truthful up front. Sure my barn is a 50+ mile trip for him and roads are not the best but I rarely charge much more than parts and supplies. It makes you wonder who your friends actually are.

Always dangerous when mixing bidness with friends or relatives. Both will USE you and put you away wet. I don't think they do it intentionally but they make some dangerous assumptions some times. Like when they think they know what your parts cost you.
Or assuming that you won't charge for time. I could go on and on but I won't.

Since I can't help being eager to help friends and relatives. I always laid out as close as I could my costs and my time in the help.
Then agreed upon I would do the work and finish the project. Still did not protect me 100% of the time.

I believe it was the Chinese folk saying " That no good deed goes unpunished. "
