Afternoon,

Just ordered a couple different rabbit strips. I have reviewed all post since site opened and in 2011/2010 was a lot more conversation on rabbit. They looked sweet but the post's have slowed with rabbit. How does the group suggest I tie the rabbit. One strip under the shank or best idea. Have never really used rabbit. A pic also if I am not asking to much!!

Thoughts?

look at the Orange Crush I posted today.... Rabbit on them... I am not an expert, but I just cut some off of the zonker strips and tie to hook.... I have never tied one with the hide attached...some of the other guys may be able to help with that..

Everyone loves a jig tied with rabbit!! Just have not posted many jigs lately but tie rabbit jigs weekly. A mixed material tail looks great on a jig.

I've been doing so much with powder I haven't tied as much as I normally do, but I have cut some cross-cuts from a natural and a red pelt. I have some soft tanned muskrat I going to cut some from and try some smaller heads and see how it comes out.

I've never tied rabbit without the hide attached! Mostly, since the fur fibers are kinda long, I like crosscut wrapped around the shank for full fluff bodies of larger jigs. Indeed, since Red & Jigger John shared their wool "secret" material, rabbit postings have declined on the forum. Here's some I used for local salt water shoreline - 1/24 thru 1/4 for small game - all KISS crosscut except for the chewed up double zonker. The smallest olive jig was actually shorter fibered squirrel zonker wrapped like crosscut & overtied to set the fur back towards the tail - learned that from JungleJim.

I tie quite a bit with rabbit. It's durable and has great action. I usually either palmer it or cut off a tiny strip of hide. If you have really GOOD zonker strips, 1/3rd of an inch gives you enough fur for an entire tail.

Really quality strips can be hard to come by, though. Rabbit is one of those materials I'd rather buy in person so I can take it out of the package and check it over.

One thing I've found is if you can get knit sweaters or scarfs with rabbit strips woven into them at thrift stores and garage sales. A bit tougher to find, but usually cheaper for the amount you get and the density and length of the fur is much more consistent because garment makers can't afford to skimp on the quality of the pelt. I bought a secondhand scarf a couple of months ago for around $10 and it had two whole hides worth of the finest rabbit strips I've ever come across, and they were already cut to the right width. All I had to do was pull them out of the backing.

Here's the type of knit you want to look for. Every single one of those fur lines is made from zonker strips sewn together end to end.

You know how when you buy rabbit strips in a pack the hair on the top and/or bottom of the strip is usually short and thin? The best part about buying this way is the garment maker already cut all that crap off because it would look terrible on the scarf/sweater/shawl/whatever and no one would buy it. Plus they have to shave the hide thin to make the garment light and so the leather is flexible enough to go through the holes and twist around the yarn. So every single inch of strips you get from one of these things is top quality USABLE fur.

Here's a couple of pics of one of the strips I got from this scarf and one of the jigs I tied from it. Kind of hard to see since it's dark brown, but hopefully you get the idea.
