This original post goes a ways back...... need to just post this somewhere up on the main pages of the site i think.

Straight Cut - These are what you want for a tail material where the hide will extend out past the hook. The hide is very soft and flexible, it moves around in the water very easily and has some excellent action.

This jig has straight cut out behind the hook and a straight cut running up the back of the jig.

Cross Cut - These are made to be wrapped around the hook shank similar to how you would wrap chenille. Just have to make sure the hair is pointing towards the back. It gives a nice full body to a jig or fly and the hair itself actually "breathes" when you give it a jigging motion, it's body expands and contracts.... very cool!!!

These jigs have both straight and cross cut zonkers. The striped fur out the back is a straight cut. The "body" fur (chart on the top jig) is a cross cut that was wrapped around the hook shank then i added in a small piece of cut from the hide fur (the black) to give it a back color.

Hope this helps.....

Once you tie a jig using zonker strips you'll quickly realize that cross cut works great for bodies while regular cut is what you use for tails. If I can only get one type of zonker it is the regular cut because it still makes a decent body while the cross cut does really well as a body but it isn't good for a tail at all. If you buy from some place that just says they have zonkers, more than likely it will be regular cut zonkers, most of the places I get stuff will have cross cut zonkers listed separately.

You can cut the hair off a crosscut strip, but that would make your tails very short. You can also make tails from crosscuts if you are tying crappie-sized jigs. Just tie your flash in first and palmer them around the rear of the hook shank.

I don't remember what I sent as far as rabbit goes. I cleaned off my desk and a little of everything made it in that box. Rabbit is very versatile, can use it in many ways. Looking forward to seeing painted heads with eyes now that you have some. Have fun with this.

I normally don't use the cross cut at all. Some like the neater body a cross cut makes. But since I tie mainly for panfish I don't care for bulky jigs. Bass fishermen would like the bulkier bodies.

Where I do use cross cut is on the real tiny jigs. Talking 1/64 oz and smaller. I cut about 1/4 in long strip. Stick the hide end right up against the head. Wrap around the shaft of hook then anchor with thread wrap. Loose at first then start tightening on about fourth wrap. When done jig should have nice balanced body with hair. On these tiny jigs you want a real short thread wrap.

Papaperch, could you please post a picture of your micro jigs tied with rabbit cross cut? I tie 1/100 up to 1/64, mostly for ice fishing using rabbit. I'm always learning new techniques from other jig tiers.
thanks, dave

What else can a guy use as a tail to go with crosscut rabbit body besides zonker strip or more rabbit. Been thinking about marabou but need colors to match. Any and all ideas welcome. Thanx
