I finally made the trip to Poverty Point Reservoir Saturday. Its a small lake at around 2,700 acres. However it is home to the largest crappie in the state. I've always stayed away from the place because it is known for boats being so close to each other that you can step from boat to boat! Not my cup of tea! Anyway of course the day I go sustained winds of 20 mph with gusts much higher than that greeted me. The plus side..... Only 15 trucks were at the ramp! I couldn't fish where I wanted so I had to settle in places out of the wind. Tough fishing but managed to pick up 9 fish. Unfortunately I didn't get my 3lber. Big fish of the day was 2.20 lbs. Huge eggsacks on the fish there. I was using 3/8 darter heads with 2/0 hooks. For size comparison that's a 1/16 pink head. Hate to say it but I may be getting over the sickle craze! Small barb is becoming a bummer.

Out here...
glad you were able to get out Ron, and the wind and low water has been a challenge as well. The barb thing has been in the back of my mind as well.

Didn't lose any this time. But as soon as they hit the net the hook falls out. Haven't noticed it wing so bad until started using 1/4 and bigger heads. Think the heavy head is giving enough leverage to pop the hook out with just minimal slack in the line. Most of the time using round bends size 2/0 have to dig the hook out.

Heavier heads is playing into a few factors. Larger profile bait and more color. Helps keep the 4 to 6" shiner from swimming around too much. Most importantly can cover more area while still keeping the line vertical. Not catching as many small fish but still catch some throwbacks.
