Pike jigs

After intensive brainpicking with Jigger John, field testing of overly long 20"wig- and rabbit jigs and a close look at Jensen Jig`s Pike Enthraller I´ve now decided on a commercial pike jig design. Most folks here think bottom bouncing when they hear "jig", so I started off with a very light, lead free 1/4th oz arky cavity, making clear it was a swim - jig.

As for weedlessness, I went for a weed-guard-optoion: I provide every jig with a hole in which the customer can glue in a 30 gauge weed guard if needed.

I like a little slower pace and more water movement than the wig jig and jensen designs, so I went for finn racoon as collar. The first cast in the harbour enticed a very large small mouthed flounder to follow up - promising and frustrating at the same time. A trip to a nearby lake was productive, though.

I really like rabbit and these look like they will drop very slowly. Never have worked with the finn raccoon, looks similar to arctic fox. Do you dye the finn yourself? I noticed the orange thread used on all of these jigs. Is it for increased visibility?

Bucho, Those are some really cool looking pike jigs!! They have the right length for max action, and I love those colorful collars!! The jighead is perfect ,too ;very similar to the leadfree wide HU jigheads from Hawnjigs that I've settled on for my pike jigs (tails made out of either rabbit or real human hair). Coincidently this past weekend I just vacationed with an old weightlifting buddy (we were both competing in our Nationals meet,so didn't have much time to fish, even tho our families were vacationing with us right on the shores of Lake Erie) who just returned from a week long fly-in trip to NW Canada : Al got to fling the wig jigs I'd made for him most of his time there. He reported that so many pike fiercely took the wigjig that his arms were almost too tired to lift at the contest ! All the hair on each jig was about bitten off, and he took pike up to 49" !

Nice! Have you tried any of those shaker blades on one of those to see how it makes them swim? Don't know how heavy they are but maybe just a hook and the blade would be enough?

I buy the finn racoon dyed from my fly stuff supplier. Cost an arm and a leg but its worth it. The red thread - I find a little red around the neck is never wrong and logistically a one color standard is much easier to run than matching dozens of colors.

The shaker blades work well but I haven`t got them on stock yet. This jig is meant for hard-pressured waters, I am reluctant to apply too much pressure, flash and noise.
