Spent the afternoon over at FlyMasters of Indianapolis learning to tie flies for northern pike and musky. Came home with some interesting information and experiences.

Class Synopsis

Here are the ties. Except for Blanton's Whistlers, black, electric green, and chartreuse was substituted for nearly all of the red and white materials in the flies.

Today's was a great class to learn how to tie sturdy, durable articulated flies. Was introduced to a component called Chocklett's Articulated Big Game Shank. It looks like a "double" cotter pin with two open loops 90 degrees apart.

Also, I received exposure to clear cure goo. Applied it to the heads of the flies with big 3D eyes. Cool stuff. Doubt that I have much need for it with my creations, but you never know.

AtticaFish has mentioned "Baitfish Emulator" before. So, I duly noted its use today and brought some home with me. Already have a few curly-tailed tying ideas to accompany the use of this material. ;)

Just need o convert to :jig:'n and we are in there! Those flies look awwwwwwsome. Have some nice simple (crazy) combo possibilies with trading colors out of the hackle on the Blanton's Whislter. Creative juices flowing...

The baitfish emulator is very cool stuff........ kind of surprised haven't seen more of it in jigs. It has a few different sizes of material all together in one strung material with the bonus of flash. Ideal mixture of flash/tailing.

Thanks for your comments Guys. :)

My nearby reservoir now has muskies. I do have a fly outfit suited to cast what I tied yesterday. Have to get out and practice with it. There could be some interesting angling in store for me next spring.

Very nice flies Pup. Looks like you are gaining a lot of skills in the classes you are taking. Cure goo and the other UV materials comes in handy for a lot of different uses. I use more than I thought I would when I bought some of it.
Thanks for sharing your pics with us.

Nice work . Check out the new Fish Masks from Flymen , they're sweet . The articulated shanks are fun to work with as well as the new fish spine .

Excellent stuff Pup!!! If you had any of those in my smallmouth river you would be getting bit by muskies without a doubt!!!!! AtticaFish gave me some of that baitfish emulator and it makes great body and tail material if you use it right, so far I either tie it in too heavy or to light but it is one material I'll keep working with. Thanks for sharing the class with us here, it is interesting to see what you learn, it really gives a new perspective and provides ideas to include in our jig creations.

Nice Whistler, looks almost like the one I caught a 120 pound tarpon on a last May. What size and kind of hook? I'm planning to use a #6/0 Owner aki

Thank you QP. :) I believe that the hook is a 2/0 or 3/0 Mustad C52S BLN.

We use a bigger hook, prefer the Owner 6/0 AKI. Expensive but, loose one big fish and you find they are pretty cheap. :D
