I tied these up a few weeks ago. This is one of my favorite flies to fish when they are shallow on the rocks. Last night I caught gills, crappie, drum, channel cat, and bass on it! Super simple and it looks great in the water.

Stump, yes. I use size 12 "hopper" hooks that have a slight curve to them... for some reason, I think they look better. Probably just a me thing!

I agree with you. Just received in a order 200 hooks like those. I plan on using some of them to make some cork poppers using some 1/4 x 3/4 cork for the bodies and with the long hook it will give room for tying on the hackle and marabou.

I have some in purple and Canadian brown, too. If I am going for a crawdad look, I tie on a crawdad orange Slumpbuster. If you have never tried that pattern, check out Charlie's Fly Box website. Charlie Craven has an awesome step by step tutorial! That fly in that color has caught me a surprising number of crappie, believe it or not.

Doc, most of the time I order stuff from J. Stockard or Feather Craft... I have nothing but good to say about both. This last batch of mohair I found in Cabelas bargain cave for a quarter a pack!

Stump, I love em in a size 8. Got some friends that tie them bigger and use rabbit, also use dumbbell eyes instead if a cone. X-small brass dumbbell eyes work really well on a #8 sickle hook....
