Found two of these dead on the ground at work this morning. Decided to check my home lake to see if any were coming off this evening. No dice there.

Get ready, folks, the Hex's are coming!

I've seen a couple here already...... but only singles here and there and no major hatches. This year has been strange for bug hatches so far though. But we also had another (back to back) cold winter that left ice on the lakes well into spring. We've got muffle heads up the wahzoo. The June Beetles (which actually emerge in May) were very few and far between. The May Flies or Hex (which normally emerge in June (i know, it is backwards)) are only sporadic so far. Once the mayflies really start to hatch on Erie...... that usually means the end of the best walleye time for the Western Basin as the 'eyes start to migrate East to deeper waters.

Sunday night, I stopped by my home lake, that has a hatch. Didn't see any.

Last night, stopped by my home lake. Found one LIVE Hex, and saw an empty shuck caught up in a spiderweb. Not sure if somehow, an empty shuck got stuck, or if a spider caught a live one and sucked it dry.

I went ahead and pulled my 5wt out, and started fishing. However, since I'm trying to test the effectiveness of a different hook on a proven pattern, I'm trying that fly out, instead of anything that resembles a Hex. I managed to catch one Bluegill, a small LMB, and missed several strikes. Next time, I'll have to pull out a Hex nymph pattern I have and try fishing that until I notice anything popping off the water.

I went back tonight. Saw two live Mayflies. Got my fly rod out, missed a few fish, didn't catch anything.
