My buddy and I snuck out about sunset last night to fish and avoid the heat. After dark, we decided to toss out the light and see what showed up.... we had never used it here before. This picture was taken within 30 seconds of the light being turned on!

THOUSANDS of minnows started swarming the light! There were so many, they blacked it out a few times! I figured you guys could appreciate this!

Jim, this one I think was made by some guy out of western Kansas. When we hit the lake with the lights, we will drop two. Once the shad show up, we catch a lot of white bass! This spot is a private sand pit lease. No shad or white bass that we know of. Just minnows for baitfish, largemouths, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. If there were whites, we would pound them!

If those were shad , they would be worth a fortune in my neck of the woods . A bag of 6 shad runs about 6.00 bucks here from the only 2 so called bait shops we have here .

Im not sure exactly what a "shad" is.
But the gravel pits I fish will do the same thing during the summer. Most of the time they'll mostly be brook silversides, which are next to impossible to keep alive.

Cool pic
Were y'all fishing the outside edges of the lights?

It could be a mixture of baitfish but I think some are shad by their profile. There are some lakes around here that have never had shad before and all of a sudden they are there.

That is crazy! I don't see how you could catch any predators in that mess - with soooooo much to eat your odds of them picking your bait would have to be huge. If there are crappie and bass in the lake, they are WELL fed. Water looks very clear too.

I see the one JungleJim is looking at..... bottom right corner area. That one sure does have the appearance of the broad side of a shad.

Lake Russell here in SC is loaded with shad. You can set up in 30' depth and after an hour of having your light in the water there will be bait from top to the bottom. We still catch good numbers of crappie while nightstalking just have to find the depth that the crappie are feeding to set your bait at. It is amazing when they get so thick that the bait fish will start jumping, a sight to see.
There should be some big crappie in that lake.
