Naming your jigs

Something I have never done is name my jigs. But, a buddy called the other day wanting more of a tan head with yellow tail and a brown body. Hmmm I keep one of everything I have tied on a rack and went looking. For the life of me, I could not figure out what he was talking about so I called him and invited him over for a cold one and maybe he could show me which jig he wanted.

He agreed and when he started looking he commented that I had too many to look at and they should be named. After looking at 25 jigs he finally found the one he was looking for. Gold Maribou, Stone chenille, Dark Cream head (custom mixed ooops, looks like coffee with way too much cream) with watermelon dusted back. and gold eyes.

Right now, everything has numbers and I have a log book detailing the tie by number. The easiest thing would be to just use the number and say its a model 1 or model 2 etc,, etc.. But I don't think that would be as attractive as a true name not as easy to remember for the fisherman that has his favorite flavor.

So tell me, do you name your jigs? and if so, do the names describe the jig or is it something that comes to mind?

I name most of my jigs. I have a jig i tie with chenille rubber legs, and a kiptail tail.they're called Raskals, and the smaller ones Lil Raskals.

another name i use is little minner and big minner for my grey ones or white ones.

Once i get more designs and start to actually sell them, they will all be named.

From a commercial point of view I find it very important to name ones product. Customers want to make sure they get exactly what had been recomended to them or what they have seen other folks being successfull with. Furthermore, if you look at flyfishing, only successfull patterns are being christioned and passed on as recipes. The others are just "nameless" tries.

I name my bass jigs. My panfish jigs I don't name the color. What I do is this... if it's a pink jig head with chartreuse feathers I tag it as PK-CH. If it is orange head orange feathers I tag it OR-OR. I have a custom purple I mix and that is CPR1, and so forth. That way the store can give me a code and there is no confusion to what they order.

I name every single one of mine. I think the name is important. My buddies are always talking smack about a FnF jig they have, it's called Hair of the Dog, Dog and Hair have nothing to do with that worthless jig. I say worthless because it's not my jig, ;).I think the name is more about being a catch phrase. Some of the following are names I have used. Willy Maker, Della Gator, Scuba Blue, Billy Badbass. Bearded Lady and on and on. Then there are the simple name like Bernie, Joy, and Joe, who by the way have been use in a 3 way and all of them caught fish at the same time. :notworthy: Just sayin!

I do not make it a habit to name jigs. I have been fishing a blue Mylar jig lately that may warrant a name though. It has been catching fish when nothing else will and just not keeper size fish either. It is a definite big fish combo when the bite is tough.

Only name mine for forum posts. I do enjoy reading the names that others give to their jigs. Sometimes, I wonder if there's a story involved. ;)
