More teaser flies

I like bugger-style teaser flies for the upper loop on a dual hook setup for crappie. They don't foul as much as two weighted jigs when casting a float. I sat down today meaning to tie one to replace one I lost to a snag on my last trip, and this was the result. Ever start tying and you just can't stop?

I catch about an equal amount on the bottom jig and the teaser. I think it has more to do with the color and depth. If both are right, the fish will bite either one. I use a jig on the bottom to provide weight.

I tie the loop in the line, then run the loop though the top of the eye and over the entire thing. Then I snug it just behind the eye. The stiffness of the line and the lack of weight makes the teaser ride horizontal in the water with the hook point upright.

The hooks are size 4 light wire aberdeens. The same kind used for live minnows and crickets. I got them on clearance at the local fishing expo this spring. They were originally straight, but I bent the eye down with a pair of pliers. Hope to try some sickle hook aberdeens if I ever get around to ordering some.

Once you get going and get the mess started it is always easier to just keep tying! :)

I use a double rig alot - jig on the bottom, aberdeen on the top with either a salted minnow or nose hooked plastic bait. Need to tie me a few of those.

If you are talking about crappie, i would just about swear on my grandmothers grave that it has everything to do with depth and ONLY depth. My normal search patterns (spinners and cranks) have not been working so well this year so i have been using fixed floats to focus (slowly) on certain depths. I have been messing around and changing the position of a fixed float AFTER i catch a fish and so far i would catch the 2nd fish at the same depth as the 1st..... not on the same hook regardless of what tied jig or plastic or bait was at that depth. More reason for me to use 2 hooks at 2 different depths when searching for crappie. ;)

Take into consideration that i really REALLY really suck at catching crappie that are big enough to bring home and fillet. :P

I mostly use them under a float or vertical jigging. I bet they would also work well for trolling.

I like them for vertical jigging because I know for sure when the jig hits the bottom. When you're fishing two jigs of equal weight when vertical jigging near the bottom in deep water, sometimes it's hard to tell whether the jig on the end is just sitting on the bottom.
